LEICA Q2/Q3 : Watch this before you buy

The focal distance scale issue is only really an issue if you shoot wide open. Shooting at f/8, like the majority of street photographers do, you get just under 2 metres to infinity. That would include 5 metres and 10 metres. A scale is never meant for critical focus but more for acceptable focus. If you want critical focus, use autofocus. If the autofocus is not good enough on the Q2, get yourself a Sony. I'm sorry if I'm missing the point but I don't see how the scale is a problem.

Very interesting. Thank you for this honest review. I own a Leica M10 and hesitate to switch to the Q2 or Q3 because sometimes autofocus is nice... And is that Elle Fanning on your photo (3mn51) ahah? Nice shot :)

Fun fact: Uncorrected distortion on that lens is hORRENDOUS. We just don't see it, because in-camera correction.

This is really the worst excuses just to justify you selling and upgrade. maybe you need still conviction to make yourself feel better about your extravagant splurge or previous stupid purchase. you use leica but at the same time blast them in the face. this is the heart of a fake disloyal customer.

Fair points. I love my Q but added a Fuji X-Pro3 to the equation to be more flexible.

I sold my Q2 because of one issue- the fixed screen. I need a tilt screen for street photography. Hoorah for the Q3. I love the Leica JPEGs. I edit the JPEGs and find they have amazing dynamic range- even able to pull detail from highlights.

Man, I was drooling for the new Q3, but this video completely dissuaded me. Very helpful and informative, thanks!

Thanks Samuel for the informative video! I would add the very poor AF to the list of deficits. I make a lot of street in Thailand and tried several cameras. By far the best combo is for me the Sony A7C with the Tamron 20-40/2.8.

trying to upgrade from xpro2. Would you recommend selling my fuji gear and going for q2(about 2800eur here in japan) or go for xt5? I want overall better image quality and less noisy images.

I wonder if new Q3 addresses any of this? 🤔

I almost decided for a sl2-s, then changed for Q2, should I say , Q3. Yours is an honest, non comercial driven, insightful and straight to the point review. Thank you again. The Leica crop modes are a total crock of you know what. A crop cannot simulate the compression perceived optically with a true 70mm lens. It's Leica's way of convincing buyers that the one focal length camera they purchased isnt that limited...........IT IS. I shoot with 24-28 mm focal on my other cameras and so have no issues with the limited focal length. But, when a company like Leica passes this insidious excuse of " it has multiple focal lengths in crops" it starts to sound desperate. Its like they made the camera and asked themselves, " what happens when this new generation buy the q2 and realise they can't zoom"......." well just make the sensor larger and con them into thinking they can crop in and all will be ok..........uuuuuuummmmmm.......NO.

A Q with a real 35mm would be perfect.

Here comes #8 for your list: imagine you are in the mountains and you try to photograph the beautiful Milky Way. Impossible!!! Somebody in Wetzlar decided that you can’t do long exposures at ISO 3200 in manual mode. What a ridiculous decision. Probably the only full frame camera with such a limitation. 😢

Sadly it's overhyped! The original Q, that lens Never opened to f1.7. Never! So one is using a f2,4 or less! Your points are correct. For the wealthy, uncaring about Tech Details, It's great. Even if way less on money, It's not for me! Bravo.

Phew I’m glad these are absolute non-reasons for me personally. And I guess generally not really reasons to not get this cam, I mean, the jpg one? Hm.

I don't see 1, 2, and 5 as a reason to complain. Besides, I never experienced 2 on my Q2. The same goes for WB. 
Now, adjusting images on the camera is probably not what the target group of Leica does in general. You are supposed to do it yourself via the manual/half-manual adjustments.

6 is totally legit! They should change that in Q3(?)
7 It is not 100% transparent, but why is that a problem?

That camera has to many issues to cost so much. Ill never understand because even as i write this, if i had that kinda money i probably would buy one. Marketing is a dangerous thing

It's actually the ONLY fixed 28mm lens camera you can buy! 😉 A true 28mm that is: with a full frame sensor. A GR3 has a 28mm "equivalent" lens, but, as it is APSC, it also only has an "equivalent" max. aperture as well

Yikes, several of these points would be total dealbreakers for me - not that I can afford a Leica, but still. At least now I don't have to pine over this model anymore haha. Really good review, and good on you for moving on from a camera that doesn't work for you. This was a year ago so I hope you found a happy buyer!

How about the Q2 M vs the Ricoh GR III ..I like black and white

nachdem er, so wie er mitteilte, ALLE Videos über die Q2 gesehen hat, verstehe ich Ihn nicht, warum er diese Camera gekauft hat.

Why didnt you check out Sony RX1R or RX1Rii? The mk 1 is half tne price of mk2 with only slow AF and no in built eVF as weakness, . It's smaller than original A7 with the 35mm, and faster F stop too.
Also A7C is the best portable camera if you want great Auto focus, AF better than A7iii and just slightly bigger and heavier than the RX1Rii (RX1R full system with lens is under 500grams)
The RX1 series is also overall always wins over both Q and Q2 in iso performance, it also retains more detail in the shadows, delivering very robust RAW files for the price and size. Very nice looking noise in iso25600 B&W.

The pics are beautiful, but quite like my X-Pro2 seems to get. The "Leica look" is fresh out of 1970. Not true anymore.

#8 the friction on the side dial is excessive for the size of the dial. After shooting 1/2 a day it becomes a nuisance.
