Will I run into problems if I have a gaming laptop with 144hz and run it on a monitor doing 240hz?

I googled "human response test" and this is what google gave me: "This is a simple tool to measure your reaction time. The average (median) reaction time is 273 milliseconds, according to the data collected". If this is true, going from 8 to 4ms will not give you any advantage when gaming. However, the smoother picture might still make it a more enjoyable experience.

Oh man, you are so wrong about so many things.
You were right with the frametimes. Then it stopped.

Modern shooters have a tick rate of max. 128 (CS:GO if set correctly, otherwise 64). Usually the tick rate is 30 (Dota 2, Escape from Tarkov, LoL, Fortnite, etc.) or even 20 (Apex Legends, Warzone 2, Minecraft). That being said, a max. of 128 refreshes happen per second, with the average being much less.

Let's calculate with a ping of 40 and a server tick rate of 60.
First the ping. It's the time in microseconds that it takes data from the host to the gameserver and once again from the server to the other players. So ping times two. That means 80ms gone - in any case, no matter how fast the gameserver's tickrate is. Otherwise the tickrate might even slow it down more. Let's continue calculating!

The server has a tick rate of 60, meaning every 16,66 ms (ha, like 60 Hz displays, what a bummer!) an update gets to the server from any player before it is then processed there - no matter the ping from any player - this is the fastest way it can be calculated no matter the ping. Even with a LAN-party, this number dictates the flow of the game.

Now, let's go back to our precious 240 Hz monitor. This thing throws an image at us every 4,16ms. So, given the example above, the server would allow you to see a change on the screen after each 4th picture shown (bummer, 60 Hz would suffice!), but even worse, your actual internet connection (and that one of every other person you're playing with) only allows you to get an updated picture every 80ms. That means no update in information for almost 20(!) frames. Bad, huh?

I, too, have a 165 Hz display. And yeah, you see the difference between 60 and even slightly between 120 and this one. But only in visual image stability and fluidness. An actual benefit only exists in singleplayer games. No MP game would give you any advantage for that. Also, 240Hz displays usually are TN or VA displays - which are way worse than IPS.
Mine (have three) are 1440p, 165 Hz, HDR, 8+2bit color depth displays. That picture quality is insane.

DON'T bother with 240 Hz... Your brain actually cannot process it that fast either!

This felt like this had the value of a longer video, but was as easy to watch as a much shorter one.

For something with as much subjectivity to it as "experiencing refresh rates", this did such a good job of breaking it down in a way that made sense, without over-complicating, and while still covering the hard math that governs it.

Great job!

It really depends on the game. For geometry dash (the game I play the most) it REALLY makes a difference. So much to the point where I can visibly see the difference between some frame rates.

When you first move up to 144 or now 240 you don't overly notice the difference. Until you go bakc to 60hz then it's basically unplayable at 60hz

When I play Portal 2, a single-player game, I cannot tell a difference between 60Hz and 120Hz maybe because a reaction time is not much of a thing for puzzle-solving. Of course, I don't play multiplayer games and competition is not a thing for me. That's because I'm so used to 60Hz refresh rate for a very long time. My LG 42" OLED TV supports 120Hz.

i just bought a 240hz monitor and the reasoning behind it was i saw my cousins monitor which was 165hz and ive had a 120hz monitor and id say the difference between 120 and 145 is noticeable enough to enjoy the higher refresh rate

Finally found a straight to point video. I sold my 2k 165hz monitor because it does struggle to keep frames around that, getting sttutering and etc. So downgraded to 1080p 144hz and that was a win win for me. If you like more valorant csgo player, go for 240hz i guess, but battle royale games 144hz i think the best, every game struggles to run anyway at high frames

I think the sweet spot is 165-175hz. You're right in the middle. It's cheaper and if you run a 4090 at monster ultra graphics on any game. You will come close but still not hit the max on a 3440 x 1440 monitor. Especially OLED like my Alienware DWF.

In my experience as of Mar 2023 unless you buy a few thousand dollar monitor the vast majority of 240hz fail to deliver a clear frame that fast. With almost every manufacturer telling lies about their actual response time the higher frame rate delivers motion blur and artifacts at 240hz, and if that monitor manages to be in a somewhat reasonable price range and somehow does achieve that it will almost certainly come with many other trade offs including things like flicker, issues with sync, qa issues, pre or post blur, hdr issues, hdr or features don't work over certain fps, overheating, etc etc. In short the technology just isn't their at a sane price currently. Anything above 165-175hz will have those trade off mentioned or an extraordinary price with still the possibility of above mentioned. People don't realize how inportand response time is, if the monitor is asking for 240 frames but stumbles over itself to deliver, you might as well stick with a 144-165-175hz as your picture will be clearer and alot smoother overall. Even the almighty G7 has these above mentioned problems including them dieing early or the heat from pushing tech that's not there too far and the glue around the bezel pops putting pressure on the center screen which likely ends with a nice big crack down the center not the only qa issue it has but is a common one, couple that with terrible customer service and we'll it's just not worth playing the panel lottery in that respect. I will lastly add that you still have to greatly research every monitor as lies are common place and specs don't mean much anymore. Rtings and hardware unboxed are good places to start to see real world examples but even unboxed isn't always 100% multiple resources are needed. Happy hunting guys!

i went from a 240hz Alienware TN panel to a 2k 165hz Dell IPS.
There's isn't any noticeable difference after 144. I'd care more about light bleeding, motion blur, overall image quality etc.
If you're going full on competitive fps, there are so many more factors that will improve your playstyle than going for 240 instead of 144 or 165.
