I’m a Dewalt guy but I have to be realistic and believe me I was surprised that I was able to trim half an acre with a small 18v ryobi which I was very impressed because I thought that it was going to burn but the motor was barely warm after using 3 9 amps battery so I was very very impressed with a brand that I thought it was a POS which is not obviously

I went with EGO I like their trimmer loading, simple although appears the competition has caught up. One thing I like to see is a trimmer guard that prevents ring barking trees. No one is offering such a guard, why.

I see some lawn care companies are using the Stihl battery trimmer with some success. Would love to have seen this trimmer included. Also, how about a comparison between the battery and gas trimmers.

Which of the 3 speeds did you have the Makita on? If it was set for 7000rpm, it would explain why it ran out of juice first.

I wish Milwaukee would do a dual battery like the other brand.

Guess since I own a bunch of Milwaukee, I'll go with them

I looked at all of these before buying initially. Milwaukee and Stihl were my benchmarks for comparison. Started with an EGO string trimmer, then blower, then chain saw. All were bought on sale at substantial discounts. I've really been amazed a the performance of the 16" chain saw. I no longer bother to crank one of my Stihls unless I need the 390 with the 24" or 36" bar. Two batteries and on charger have failed within warranty. One call to EGO and a replacement was shipped. Good product, good support. I have learned that Stihl is a part owner of EGO which might explain the performance.

I'd love an updated version or 20v version of this test. The flexvolt dewalts are hard to find & I've heard some horror stories about that battery platform. Plus additional/replacement batteries cost the same as the tool... crazy. Seeing performance of more affordable 20v tier trimmers would be great for those of us who live on smaller lots.

The Ryobi is the worst line design in the world. Bypass this one if you are looking. Overall better to get a cassette type string line. The design for that Ryobi is SO bad!

This was a very good review. I recommend testing in very tall stringy weeds as well.
I got the Worx 40V 13" Cordless String Trimmer at Sam's Club for $99 (on clearance). Includes 2x20v batteries and charger with an 8 year battery warrantee. The 8 year battery warrantee is what sold me. It is a single string trimmer (the ones in Project Farm reviews are all dual string). The Single string trimmer is much slower at cutting than a dual string and I can feel it struggling at times when I get into 1+ft. tall grass but it keeps going for 30 minutes of almost non-stop trimming (when new). We both run out of juice at about the same time and need a recharge. I have not timed battery recharge time but it is less than my recharge time (at age 68). I would like more torque/power for going fast through tall stuff but can live with the slower pace. The main advantage is that the head does not clog in very tall grass/weeds. However, the motor is on the head and gets covered in grass goo.
I tried a friend's DeWalt (not sure of the model) and it got grass/weeds wrapped around the shaft so the grass had to be manually removed, a PIA. The Worx does not have the grass/weed wrapping issue.
The line advance does not require tapping but instead, you press a button on the handle to advance line. The heavy 0.80 line seems to last a long time - at least 3-4 sessions. Winding the spool is manual. If the line gets cut at the level of the spool it won't feed automatically and you have to get the cover off to feed some manually. It is not all that difficult, unless you just weed whacked Poison Ivy. (Weed whacking Poison Ivy is NOT recommended under any circumstances since the oils can mist or spray on you, even if you are at the end of the weed whacker.) The one bad thing about the line advance mechanism is that it complicates the head spool mount and I have not figured out how to mount a "blade" type after market head. i.e. I am stuck with using the heavy duty trimmer line. I happen to have a bunch so am not motivated to break things to mount blades. :)

I have one MW straight shaft trimmer and also a WM Quik-loc trimmer . The quick lock is not as powerful or comfortable to use but it's a jack of all trades in that you can swap out with other attachments.
