I'm always shocked by the number of people who say that streaming is more expensive than cable, and it turns out that they have all the major services, at the same time. But seriously - you only have 24 hours per day. Some of that time you spend working, either at a regular job, or taking care of kids, or whatever. You also have to sleep sometime. And you might want to go out and have a social life. So what really is the point of paying for all those services every month, when you will never have enough time to watch them all?

The only sport I like is baseball, so I pay for that when it's in season. When it's over, I can drop those services and pay for other stuff, as I di have more time for TV in the colder weather. There are some services I do keep year round, but they aren't very pricey.

We pay 50 per month for cable- get to record, can see whos calling onmthe tv, have a nice tv grid that isnt confusing (just have to learn where the channels are that you like) etc, all in one place, no service jumping to find shows we like. I dont see the allure of cable cutting. Cutting cable means losing several,of the only channe,s we watch like sci fi, tcm, discovery channel, etc, and we especially like espn for certain things like,f-1 racing, x-ganes, olympics etc which we get in the $50 cable charge. Is it possible to get the premium channels we now get with cable and be under $50 a month? If not, im not sure the extra hassel of having to search several streaming services, losing the call feature that lets you see whos calling, record feature etc would be worth it? Or am i missing somehting?

Your videos are generally pretty good; however, comparing a ROKU remote that only controls ROKU service and possibly a power for the TV, vs. a TV remote that controls all functions of the TV as well as in most cases many additional components such as a receiver/Video Player, etc. is really not fair and some (like me) will say ludicrous. For watching just a streaming service only a few controls on the factory TV remote are needed.
I have Roku device connected to a 13 year old Sony smart TV that years ago went dumb. I also have two fairly new Sony Android TVs and when operating a streaming service, only a few buttons are pushed on either of the remotes.
And I know you are getting a spiff from Roku to advertise their products, but to make ludicrous statements are demeaning to you. Try not to treat the consumer watching your videos as a complete moron and don't say it is due to seniors this comments was needed. I'm 75, and despise people assuming seniors need simple things or they fail. I have friends in their 40s that cannot operate a DVR and need simple to watch a tV.
Just saying....

Most ppl are deathly afraid of internet.
And all it implies.
They touch some button on remte and get totally lost
Wait for a busy relative to come and "fix" it.
Cable cos are aware of that and chargeeee.
They get lost on cable remote too.
They call me inspector gadget out of spite.

Hi Michael. Thank you for the information. I could not find this info in your videos. I have a summer home and a winter home. My summer home Cable Company is Xfinity and my winter home Cable Company if COX. We watch local channels for news and sports. The cost of 2 different cable companies with equipment is “of course” high, even though I put one on seasonal when I’m not at the property.
Do you have a recommendation for a streaming company that I can use at both locations and get the local stations at the property I’m located at?

Best regards

You still have to sign up for the Internet access. No matter what other entertainment services you choose. Those are determined by your local politicians signing up with whatever monopoly they got paid by. It is then so much easier and cost efficient to add whatever programing you need rather then having to sign on to oher internet platforms (that you need anyway) and then pick other media providers to add services to. I.E. you still need someone to provide you with internet access even if you want to buy your netflix, hulu, whatever from someone else. They are simply trying to tie internet access with entertainment services. And it seems to work out, unfortunately....

DISH network raises its price every 6 months. They charge more for content or they charge more for equipment. I worked there and they are a horrible company. The owner is mean and nasty. He absolutely never talks to employees. The pay is very low, and the environment is terrible. They opened a call center in an old mall that went bankrupt. In the winter it is freezing cold because there are no walls. There is a glass ceiling and when it rains hard it is so loud on the glass ceiling you cannot talk on the phone. Team managers are just nasty. They scream at employees - scream! The culture is also nasty. The building besides being cold was filthy. They fire employees on a regular basis. They had a "we are hiring" sign outside the building for over 10 years!! It gave a pay range but no one was hired at the higher pay level.

The biggest issue is that most people get their internet through the cable provider. If you try to go to internet only, the jack ip the internet price! There are other options for internet, but it’s not as stable and fast. I’ve simply just kept cable because of this. When I ran numbers, the amount saved wasn’t even worth it. The other thing about these cable companies I don’t like is the channel packages. I wish I could just get basic cable at a really cheap price. Not happening. These people are purposely manipulating people!

I've never really been a fan of cable or ota TV. Had a hard run of events over the last few years and don't even have a TV now, unless you count my monitor and PC which is over 10 yrs old (but maxed out w a Phenom II X4 955 95W cpu and a cheap oem 2GB GDDR3 gpu). I've resorted to my old hobby of collecting physical DVD and bluray movies and series'. And I love it! The only down side is that a lot of lesser known media is only available on DVD, and proprietary media (like Netfix produced movies and series') are only available via their streaming services.

It is a lot of fun for me rummaging through DVDs at Dollar Tree, the local library sales shelf, collecting movie series', and finding collector's edition, steelbook, and the rarity of some content I love.

I really should get a TV just for troubleshooting others' tech tho. And having something I can just turn on and watch. PC is a bit of a pain sometimes.

I think the best method to find out which channels are needed is to connect an antenna, install an OTA box like the AirTV2, turn off the cable box, and then try using TV as is. Having the local channels available for the entire house would partially simulate cable TV from the start. Then as the days go by, you will see what channels are truly needed, and slowly build up from there. Except for the DVR purchase it would be 0 cost. The cable box can also be turned back on if needed.

Good overview. I suggest you factor in losing the DVR when quitting cable/satellite and the ways to get back recording capability. It’s a big factor.

We cut the cord just over a year ago following your advice and we do not see any reason to return to cable. Our reason was we were tired of limited options of good television and the insane cost we were paying for watching TV we didn't like. We initially tried the free trials of the cable 2.0 and Netflix and Hulu plus a few free ones. Now, we have Sling, Hulu with no commercials Hulu and FreeVee. Plus a stack of other speciality free streams and two $5 a month that rotate in and out. This winter we traveled as always by motorhome and used Visible unlimited data to watch our same channels and saved the monthly fees of Dish TV.... Luvin' streain' Thanks😎

Another great streaming service is Amazon Prime. It has tons of things to stream, far more than Netflix. Although most of it won't show until you do a search (because there is way too much in each category to step through using the interface). There is all kinds of niche hobby program series for instance.

One thing many people forget to mention is the extra data you'll be using while most providers have a cap and will charge for the extra data over that cap! I cut my TV service, kept the internet and added their "unlimited internet" add on for $30. 4 Rokus, 4 computer plus a 24/7 server, two tablets and 4 smart phones and data is not a concern! No worries about going to sleep watching Crunchyroll anymore! For local channels, not setup an anntenna yet, (in a condo) so just purchase for now the provider standard TV package and access it with the Xfinity App on the Roku box. went from $191 and 200 channels I never watch or understand the languge to 135 w/90 channel and I stream everything else! Hope this helps.
