It is time to rise from my grave as written, with the final Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC character upon us! This time, my usual friend group wasn't really around to have some Sora hijinks, so I reluctantly went on Quickplay and uh...yeah the online environment kinda sucks huh?
I don't even mean the netcode! I ran into so many people who'd just run away and t-bag or spam smash attacks in high lag, hoping to land some kills. I ran into rulesets I didn't like and generally had a rotten time, but I managed to pull some of the better matches from the session for you all here today!
So here's Sora, from Kingdom Hearts. Smash has become one of the biggest crossovers in gaming, so it feels right to end the DLC with the star of one of gaming's weirdest crossovers. Take the angsty, belt-loving style of Final Fantasy under Tetsuya Nomura and cross it with Disney characters and...somehow Kingdom Hearts is the result! As for Sora himself, he's pretty faithful! Swinging the Keyblade around with reckless abandon, being INCREDIBLY floaty...and spamming magic whenever he gets a chance, he's a fun character and fairly straightforward on the face of it. The biggest thing with him though is that his recovery move, Aerial Sweep, can transition into his side special, Sonic Blade, giving him almost unparalleled recovery potential. But to balance things out, Sora's fairly slow and REALLY light, so it can be hard for him to survive long and land his stronger moves to really net a kill. Let's begin!
Match 1: Mute City SNES
Sora (Me) vs. Lucina (aholi) vs. Sora (Link)
Sadly never got any matches on Sora's home stage, Hollow Bastion. But then again, probably for the best since I'd probably get a copyright strike from Square Enix over the music so I'll live. Some really wacky item shenanigans here! Home Run Bat continues to be scary, Lucina gets a REAL good kill with the soccer ball and even the rare Gooey Bomb helps to even the score. I got pretty gutsy near the end, Sonic Blading right into Lucina while she had a Final Smash ready. Kinda surprised that killed, honestly!
Match 2: Mushroom Kingdom II (Battlefield form)
Sora (Me) vs. Byleth (brendon)
I did some free-for-alls and some one-on-ones but uh...to be honest most weren't that fun to watch. I either got my ass handed to me, or it was a boring display of two Soras having no idea what they're doing. I liked this one though, and it was neat to see the characters from the end of each Fighter's Pass duke it out. Also good to know that Sora's down smash does a ton of damage to shields. Was the thing I needed to finally take down brendon's second stock but uh...it took me way too long to do so.
Match 3: Wrecking Crew
Doom Slayer (me) vs. Dr. Mario (despair) vs. Pyra/Mythra (Alex) vs. Kirby (dongjonson)
Yeah uh...this match sucks. As you can see by the fact that it is nearly half of this video's runtime...it was a slog, and just a GLIMPSE into the annoyances that session brought me. We've got it all! Lag! People running away the whole match! Pyra spamming her big, annoyingly strong moves in said lag! I mostly kept this because I felt so vindicated suffering through all of this and coming out on top with Doom Slayer. I'll take victories where I can get them.
Match 4: Mishima Dojo
Terry (Me) vs. Cloud (Bowdy Boy) vs. Pokemon Trainer (Crazy Fred) vs. Byleth (FeMC)
After I had my fill of Sora and Doom Slayer, I decided to go and use all of the other DLC characters I had never played Quickplay with. This...is the only one that I consider worth saving and as such, that's the last thing from this session I'll show. Was a fun, chaotic fight! Felt like good old Smash! No trolls, the connection was OKish and we had some good character variety!
I'd love to play more Smash and upload matches in the future but I think I'm more or less done with Quickplay. Too many problems to list with the online experience in general, so any Smash you see from me are going to come from friend matches.
I HAD considered uploading matches from Nickelodeon All Star Brawl but...the game's got some big issues that need to be addressed. Most of all, the netcode isn't up to snuff. It's also a ridiculously fast game, too fast to really properly watch at times, and needs some real polishing up, which I hope the devs deliver on. It has some solid ideas, it just needs more time. As for Strive...I'll get back to it soon, I hope. The latest patch eased the server connection issues which is great, and I'm sure the next DLC character for that is going to be revealed in due time so I'll strive to pick that game up again soon.
Until then, happy Smashing/Strive to do better/uh...Nick Knack Patty Whack...throw those devs a bone!
