I don't like the "no mechanical connection" idea. Electronic faliure would automatically mean accident. Even if it'd be just one in a billion cases, why play lottery with anyone's lilfe?

I'm still hoping someone can explain how power steering systems work. This just turned out to only explain electric-assisted power steering.
Turns out, it was just a Tide ad.

I came here to find out how power steering works, not get an advertisement for e-steering.

I say the advantages of a power steering is it is good at executing parking like parallel and reverse parking as you can get the turn you want with minimum steer makes you less prone on over steering that can cause you errors. It takes less muscle and pressure when parking your vehicle

Hydraulic power for the win. Yeah you have to spend more on power steering fluid but I'd rather do that and not die if an electrical system gives out. Worthwhile trade-off

On another note, is an electric pump on a hydraulic system a good idea? Does it prevent parasitic loss while still having proper feedback? I find that design choice interesting.

Most cars with EPAS systems have a light feeling steering wheel. But some manufacturers do it well, and give some weight to the steering, to make it feel more natural.

Surely you want to keep a mechanical connection between steering wheel and wheels incase of electrical failure.

I had an EPAS system go out many years back on a Ford Fusion. Got rid of it since it was a $1600 fix and just not worth the money. So they are mostly to repair than hydraulic power steering.

So that’s why I hear the engine revving up when I steer

I like the way they make it sound like cars were hard to drive without Power steering;; my first 6 cars didn't have it and they were no harder to drive than the Granada my brother let me have a go of which did. For the record I also drove a 3 ton (yes they were 3 ton Unladen back then not 7.5 Tonne Gross) truck which also had no power steering and was an absolute pleasure to drive.

My current car has power steering but it seems to go a lot further; in that it gets tighter at speed when it isn't really needed; and becomes very light at parking speeds.

So basically your life depends on a few wires? Sounds dangerous to me. The Radio can be electric. But not the power steering. What happens if it shorts and sends the wheels 90 degrees to the right, right when theres a truck there and youre going at 100 miles per hour. Would you risk your children’s life if they were with you on wires and software??

Meh, I’m happy with my ford power steering pump. Can turn a 4,000 pound car with my pinky.

I went from a modern sports car with PAS to an older Lotus Elise recently, which has 100% direct steering. It's like heaven.

Sorry, but electronic steering has ruined most cars.

And what do u do when your steering fails in the middle of the on traffic turning. Coming from an electrical engineer perspective. 60% good 40% dangerous. Pls don't forget the disclaimer mr expert.

What will happen if mouse eat some of the cables of this electric steering wheel?
In the software development the average bugs per lines of code is 15-50 per 1000 lines and for sure the software behind the steering wheel will have more than 1000 lines of code.
At all this is is the dumbest idea of all times and even violates the most important rule in programming which is IF SOMETHING WORKS DO NOT TOUCH IT!

I have 1997 honda accord it was leaking power steering fluid bad I just took the power steering belt off boom manual steering dont have to worry about the pump going out the belt break or fluid I've been driving it like this for 5 years no problem yeah you have to put your shoulder into it at a dead stop just turning the wheel but it doesn't matter what speed your going even if just 1mph turns with ease.

I don't feel comfortable with that. The future of steering not actually having a mechanical connection at all. I would still want to have the mechanical connection.

So what is power steering?
