There's a very simple, but unfortunate reason why straight people are usually cast to play gays/lesbians, over actual gays and lesbians. It's because the director is typically looking for an actor who can portray the stereotype they want for their production. It just so happens that that stereotype is more easily portrayed by straight people than by gays and lesbians. If the director wanted someone who could realistically portray a gay person, they would cast a gay person in the role. Unfortunately, that's not what they're looking for.
