I'm moving there next month. I'm not old enough to get a retirement visa (ya gotta b 65) but you can stay 90 days and get a 90-day extension per calendar year. I'm going to scoot around to Costa Rica and other nearby destinations to flesh out my yearly quotas. I must say, I'm most excited about this place (El Poblado and Laureles, primarily) and maybe when I get old enough, l can do something more permanent and fulfilling. Just be careful when you venture to those hills opposite the rich Poblado area. I prefer the towns outside Medellin and the coffee region. My wife and spent a week in Medellin and you dont want to hang around Communa 13 at night.

It definitely has that La Condesa, Roma vibe. That Cafe Noir looks like my kind of spot. It's bougie but, still affordable. The art is fantastic. Some of the best food can be had at markets and grocery stores. This city looks absolutely amazing. The views from the mountain area are fantastic.

I have been living in Bogota for 6 years now. However. I have visited Medellin a few times and I was robbed once and almost robbed a few more times (in El Poblado).

Tips: 
Play Tejo
Do not go to Park Presidente at night.
Skip Mondongos. You can get the same food for half the price. :) Also, that building was a HQ for Pablo Escobar at one time and another cartel bombed it with 2 car bombs.
Communa 13 is something made for you guys/Tourist. It is not a transformed neighborhood . 2 or 3 streets are safe to wander in but the place as a whole is still pretty much the same. Every business up their pays extortion money to operate. If they don't pay..... Adios. It is a good place to go but the stories are misleading.
Careful walking in the wood at Arvi. A lot of people get robbed walking in the woods.
