I'm incredibly grateful. Quite some time since I last saw! Excellent period. Casting is excellent. Richard Conte is one of the all-time greats, although Tierney is lovely as always and Ferrer is menacing. A top performer in his era! Preminger's direction is almost flawless, and Arthur Miller's camerawork is excellent! Wonderful to see this again!

Otto Preminger never disappoints! Gene Tierney's acting was top notch (especially when conveying a dazed hypnotic state), the wardrobe was chic and gorgeous (especially for the ladies' party dresses), and the suspenseful conspiracy plot was filled to the brim with clever manipulation ploys (I legitimately thought to myself "ohhh, so that's what he did that for!" several times throughout the film).

Okay, elegant, cosmopolitan and articulate ... but I really wanted Conte to punch Ferrer in the stomach, the rat.

Richard Conte was an odd choice (he hardly looks or sounds like "William Sutton") but the rest of the cast is terrific.

Despite the psychological blather, this was a gorgeous film with gorgeous Gene Tierney, who apparently had some real-life mental problems of her own. Whatever, this was so crisp in b/w, and Richard Conte so handsome and charming as her loyal husband, not to mention the despicable hypnotist Jose Ferrer...we know what's coming but remain SPELLBOUND (another great film) to the dramatic, BIG KISS (what else?) finale. I like what someone said here, that "The ghost of the police detective's wife hung over the last half of the film." I have to admit that I liked the way they let our lovely leading lady off for shoplifting, the crime of many women abused or neglected in childhood, and I've got the grey suede boots to prove it!

An ironic 'aside' to this picture is that Gene Tierney developed measles while pregnant, producing a daughter who was so damaged mentally by the virus that she needed constant lifetime care. Tierney later heard a fan confess that she'd been suffering from measles when she met Tierney. The actress was so shocked that she began to 'come apart' mentally and never really recovered. Bu late.1959 she was still having mental therapy, working in a dress-shop instead of movies.

Gene Tierney's husband, Oleg Cassini, designed her wardrobe for most of her films. He did a great job. He also designed for Grace Kelly and Jackie Kennedy. He was very talented.

Certainly an underrated noir, it improves with each viewing. Jose Ferrer completely steals the movie and Gene Tierney is always wonderful. Richard Conte has been better, but he makes his role work. Charles Bickford, Constance Collier and the inimitable Fortunio Bonanova are all great in their supporting roles. All in all a great film. They just don't make them like this anymore.
