Ok, folks, the outlet that I added was on the opposite side of the wall in the same cavity which I stated several times in the video. There was no reason to fish the wires because the short piece of wire that I showed in the beginning of the video was all that I needed to do this install.

If youre not an license electrian , i would not be making these videos as a guide to follow because you need to use a volt meter to test for load..

Somewhat oversimplified. Does the box need to be near the studs? How do you get the wire through the studs in the wall?

How did you tap into the existing wire? The wire just pops into the outlet by magic?

Thank you for this video. I’ve been wanting to add an outlet to my downstairs bathroom since there are NO outlets in there. My living room wall is opposite the bathroom with a plug in that will work.

But to find the new wiring from the existing box can't be that easy. When it's fed into the wall how do you actually locate it? If the new end doesn't get to the new outlet hole then you can't grab it to pull it through. This part of the process is obviously crucial but was skipped over and not explained.

All that's holding the box is those 'wings' holding on to the edge of the drywall. BAD IDEA ! This is a very weak and wobbly attachment. The original box was screwed/nailed ito a wall stud. THAT'S the way to go with a new outlet box. Outlet boxes are made to attach to studs specifically when the drywall is allready installed. These are far sturdier.

Never use the push plugs on the back of the outlet. I had several come lose working on old outlets on my house. Wrap the wire around the screws on the side using the J hook method. This way, even if t he screw happens to come lose, the wire will stay attached and not short out on something and potentially cause a fire.

On your wire stripper there are 2 little holes. They are for making your hook to go around the screws for the outlet.

Don't run outlets from a circuit in a different room. It's an accident waiting to happen! Some asshat ran an outlet in the garage from the circuit in our kitchen, so if I turn off the fuse to the garage, that outlet is still live! I'm not dumb enough to work on an outlet without testing it before I touch it, but there are a lot of people who will assume that because several outlets are off in a room, all of them are off.

Beautiful job…and what I mean by “beautiful” you presented the video so to the point and very clear….I’ve done many outlets but I needed a refresher, I was thinking about how to get the “juice” from the other side of the wall…now I know just open the existing outlet send the wire to the other side grab the wire on the other side connect the retro outlet then connect the wires to the existing outlet….thank you.

Only the brass hot side of an outlet will have the tab broken to have the outlet on two circuits such as a kitchen counter outlet. The cable in there will most likely be a 14/3 so there will only be one neutral needed on the other side of the plug because the hot side will be 180 degrees out of phase.

Thank you sir! That was very helpful. I started out today trying to add and outlet to a 3 way switch. However the switch I was branching off of was the second switch. So I backed off of that and decided to come off the outlet from the other side of the wall. Safer and done the correct way. 👍
