this is easily my favourite song of all time. a song like this, sung like this about topics like these just hits so hard. i was a victim of sexual assault when i was 8 and i've had PTSD since i was 5 (it's a long story). my dad was absent from my life a lot and we never really got along that well. music was and still is my outlet, and this song just always gets me in the feels. this song has saved my life so many times i don't even remember now. Em, if you're seeing this, i hope you know that i'm thankful to you for making this song, and i want you to know that my girlfriend's pregnant. if she's having a boy, we're calling him Stan, after the song you wrote. it saved us both so many times and we're infinitely grateful for it and it's just incredibly important to us. thank you.

"Stan" was released on November 21, 2000 as the 3rd single from Eminem's 3rd album "The Marshall Mathers LP" (2000).

The song samples "Thank You" by an English singer Dido.

The song tells the story of a fan named Stan obsessed with Eminem. The character grows angrier as each of his letters to the rapper go unanswered, eventually leading him to drive his car off a bridge with his pregnant girlfriend in the trunk. Eminem responds in the final verse, only to realize that he'd recently seen Stan's tragic story on the local news.

The name Stan has given rise to a slang term which refers to maniacal and overly obsessed fans of a celebrity or personality and has been included in the Oxford English Dictionary.

In the music video Dido plays Stan's girlfriend.

In 2011 Dido named her newborn son Stanley and told reporters it just happened to have always been her favourite name.
