I know I'm kind off late on this, but there is an app in the Google App Store that make your phone's flashlight flicker at whatever frequency you like. I use it to regulate the speed of my turntable.

Instead of a strobelight you can use a camera app with manual settings for 50FPS. Works marvelous when I adjust Commodore floppy drives.

I saw about 5 of these Rega 78 with cartridge for around 100$ canadian each in the late 90's but my Garrard model T is perfect for my needs. Old Lenco turntables have 4 speeds and can be adjusted.

Can I recommend that you look out for a vintage turntable such as the Dual CS750 . This is a 3 speed turntable that I had some years ago that came with an ORTOPHON cartridge and a 78rpm stylus was available. I archived my 78rpm records to CD via MINI DISC .This enabled me to edit before burning to CD using my Pioneer CD RECORDER.

I trash-picked a 1951 Westinghouse back in the day, and a $5 tube made it work. Artie Shaw and HO, Stardust/Temptation are awesome.

Use an old Garrard with changeable headshell.

After all the xtra add-ons maybe you should have gone for the Audio-Technica to begin with 😅

I would have thought that maybe the new power supply may have had too low of a voltage.

Thank you again Technoan for taking us on yet another of your fascinating journeys of audio/electronic discoveries. Your findings follow my conclusions very closely.

My 78rpm experience began in 1945 when my parents gifted me their HMV model 101 portable Gramophone and an armful of circa 1920/30s records. I was just five years old at the time.
(Sorry, but my present age must remain my best-kept secret)🙂).
. What tremendous changes there have been since then.

Recently, I have been amusing myself by playing severely worn and scratched 78s with surfaces that appear to have been heavily sandpapered and playing them through a free online AI app that can remove anything that was not intended to be on the record.

Alternatively, it can remove any particular musical instrument; even the vocalist(s). Instant karaoke!
I have yet to trial it on Edison-style cylinders or Diamond Discs, but I'm reasonably confident that these would also respond satisfactorily.

Incidentally, both here and in the UK, the flicker rate of both incandescent and regular fluorescent lamps is 100 times per second.
We would regard a 50-Hertz flicker to be quite annoying.
(Try wiring a suitably rated silicon diode in series with a light bulb to experience the effect of a 50-cycle flicker).

Yup I love that Audio Technica turntable. I didn’t realise that 78’s needed a different stylus.

You could have gotten a WAY BETTER turntable for less money in the Dual CS-608- I have one,and it has the 78 speed, and it's direct drive! with adjustable speed control, with lighted strobe, and Ultra-low mass arm.

Adjusting pots isn't as bad as you think it is. While things go wrong, things have a natural ageing to them as well. Pots are there to address this.
If that wasn't the case they'd put in precise value resistors in instead.

I "restored" (just electrical and mechanical) an old 1950s tube radio a few years back that has an integrated record player on top. Guess that was still important in East Germany at the time. So i've made my own experiences with this.
78s don't really use a V-shape to pick up the sound, the stylus is meant to scrape at the bottom (just consider the weight of it on a mechanical player). The sound is picked up just through the side to side motion of the stylus compared to a combination as would be the case with stereo vinyl record players. So an actual mono cartridge for a mono player of the time does do a decent job. I really haven't considered the width of the groove actually, don't know why. But i presume the angle of the cone is the dividing metric.
