Chinese People Try Panda Express For The First Time

Funny how the older ones like it and younger doesn't. In some of these i feel American kids with parents from different countries just wanna be extra lol

Place is lousy. The Fried rice sucks - zero taste.

The Asian American kids seem focused on whether Panda Express is "authentic" while the immigrants are focused on whether it tastes good. Very telling.

Mainland non-cantonese tend to look down on what isn't "authentic" while those from Hong Kong and Guandong tend to be more practical and accepting as long as it tastes good.

The older generation were fairly critical while the younger generation were just overly critical 😂

The younger ones are so defensive definitely too long around American kids

The kids that probably never been to china: "NOOOO, I CANT EAT THIS!!!! ITS NOT 100% AUTHENTIC!!!!"

The elders who are probably immigrants that were raised in china: "Good Job :)"

I’ve been to authentic Chinese, food, restaurants in china and the reason you don’t see westerners is the ingredients used. Not very appetizing. Chinese food sold in the USA is tailored to western taste. Seahorse and street pigeon anyone?

its the fact how most said from the seniors, it tastes similar. but when it comes to the teens, especially during hot and sour soup, they degrade it,,,

I hang out with a lot of people that come from different backgrounds. I have a group of girlfriends who are Philippine and they took me to an authentic Chinese restaurant in the Bay Area. I didn’t like the dishes at all and authentic orange chicken is what I ordered. Was not the same as the one you’d get from panda. I definitely prefer “American” Chinese food then “authentic”.

Jeez, you don't see Americans over in Japan/Korea/China/Singapore/Malaysia criticize restaurants serving western food. Those young kids were kind of rude.

Young people trying hard to have their culture apart of them. Every thing is bad. Older generation knows their culture and have nothing to prove. “the old man” so he enjoys the experience. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom.” Wisdom comes with age.

Restaurants offering ethnic food consistently tailor what they offer to their customer's tastes. Thus cuisines such as Italian, Hispanic, French, and Asian lack authenticity. When immigrants from Europe and Asia arrived in the US around the turn of the 18th century they had to adapt their cuisine to what was available here which changed the character of their food. The general population in the US acquired a taste for ethnic fare and as a result their cuisine began to be offered commercially. Over the decades the large restaurant chains have tailored their dishes to the American addiction to sugar and salt and cut corners by using premade frozen ingredients. I would wager that those spring rolls were frozen and not made in house. The Asian grocer I go to used to carry fresh homemade pork spring rolls and believe me they were totally different from the frozen variety. Unfortunately I believe they had to stop carrying them because they weren't collecting a meal tax on prepared foods. (Ain't bureaucracy wondeful! NOT!) I'm Italian and I've eaten at Olive Garden only once because I was given a gift card and the food there is a travesty of Italian cuisine so I can definitely understand their dismay with the food at Panda Express.

American Chinese fast food SMACKS, but panda Express sucks. Find a panda knockoff in a sketchy area. That's where you get the good stuff, they always hook it up too 👌

I trust the word of the elders over the young. The boy just wanted to look cool and be like "i know what im talking about this sucks" because his view of panda was influenced by modern media.

Notice how the girl who said the chow mein was not bad got immediately judged by her peers. The young people think it’s uncool to like Panda Express cause they feel like they need to prove something, the old people are judging based on taste.

I love how the American Chinese teens are like "this is not authentic at all, this is gross." While the older people literally from China are like "This is very similar to how we make it, this is pretty good."

Its like buying Johnsonville Polish sausage and thinking it tastes like Polish sausage, when you never had Real Polish sausage LOL Or eating at Olive Garden and thinking it's Italian food LOL

Real soy sauce is fermented the vegetables are fresh and anyone who loves authentic Chinese/Mandarin/Thai/Szechuan food would never touch Panda food. Blah it is cardboard. I ate real Asian food and it is amazing. Americanized versions are nothing like the real thing.

The food looks totally different in quality today in 2023. Not in a good way 😑 An I heard panda express is now pledging to use cage free eggs, but they havn't used real eggs in their fried rice since 2015

Yeah you can tell that the younger generation was trying so hard to come across like their palette was so authentically Chinese to make up for their American-ness so I trust the older generation more than those fake posers.

Hahaha meanwhile in China, their McDonald's is selling shrimp patty burgers and their Dunkin Donuts is rockin' dry pork and seaweed donuts! HAHAH (look it up!)

Basiclly the young people are trying to be too cool. And the older people are more centered and accepting

The elder gentleman who liked everything reminds me of my grandmother. During the 1920s, she was one of the six children of a Polish immigrant (who ended up in Chicago City Jail, where he died), she had a lot less to eat than she needed or wanted. She says that her family licked the plates until they were clean. In comparison, the Great Depression were good times.

I wonder if the elder gentleman remembered similar times. If he was in the PRC, then he might have lived through the Great Leap Forward and the famines. Hunger makes the best sauce as do memories of it -- by definition everything that is edible tastes good if you endured real, bone-gnawing hunger.

I'm guessing that a social economic status growing up is a influence on the decision making. Seems the older generation may have a greater appreciation for just having food.
