While this was going on the tet offensive was going on full-force, that also failed but shocked the American public back home and really damaged American morale in Vietnam.

My dads first day in Vietnam he got rocketed, hadn't even really met anyone yet and the guy issuing rifles said to wait till tomorrow! This was at Chu Lai guys at Khe Sanh were hardcore.

The fact is, the battle itself was a PAVN feint to lure large amount of US troops from Tet Offensive '68 areas near and around the coast and then the PAVN artillery and guns surrounding the base would bombard the American troops daily and inflict casualties.

The PAVN didn't even prioritized in capturing the base like they did against the French at Dien Bien Phu, if an assault is not viable they would never try to launch major assault on the base with many NVA troops.

I think it would be really interesting to see this War from the Viet Minh/Viet Cong perspective - we`ve seen lots and lots of footage showing all aspects of the time the GIs spend there, but I barely saw anything about how it was for Vietnamese soldiers. Propably wont happen though.
