The DEATHS Of British Queens

Queen Victoria
In July 1900, Victoria was struck by tragedy with the death of her second son, Alfred. Struggling through a year marked by sadness, she spent her final Christmas at Osborne House, battling rheumatism and failing eyesight. She passed away on 22 January 1901, aged 81, in the presence of her eldest son, Albert Edward, and grandson Wilhelm II, with Edward VII succeeding her immediately.

Victoria's funeral, as per her instructions, was a military affair reflecting her lineage as a soldier's daughter and head of the army, featuring white attire instead of black. She was laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Prince Albert, in the Royal Mausoleum at Windsor Great Park, ending a remarkable reign of 63 years, seven months, and two days, making her the longest-reigning British monarch until surpassed by her great-great-granddaughter, Elizabeth II, in 2015.

Queen Elizabeth ii
At 15:10 BST on 8 September 2022, the Queen passed away at the age of 96, with her death attributed to old age as per her publicly released death certificate on 29 September. Her passing, the first of a monarch in Scotland since James V in 1542, was officially announced to the public at 18:30. Throughout the day, members of the royal family, including Prince Charles, Princess Anne, and others, gathered at Balmoral Castle. Prime Minister Liz Truss and Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, received updates on the Queen's declining health, with the official announcement of her passing made at 18:30. The royal family communicated her peaceful passing at Balmoral through newswires, Twitter, and official notices, stating that the King and Queen Consort would remain at Balmoral for the evening before returning to London the following day.

Mary I
Following Philip's visit in 1557, Mary once again believed she was pregnant, anticipating a baby due in March 1558, even designating her husband as regent in her will for their unborn child's minority. However, no child was born, and Mary reluctantly acknowledged her half-sister Elizabeth as her lawful successor. Weak and ailing from May 1558, possibly suffering from ovarian cysts or uterine cancer, Mary passed away on 17 November 1558, aged 42, at St James's Palace, amidst an influenza outbreak that also claimed Archbishop Pole's life. She was succeeded by Elizabeth. Despite her wish to be buried beside her mother, Mary was laid to rest in Westminster Abbey on 14 December, eventually sharing a tomb with Elizabeth, bearing the inscription: "Consorts in realm and tomb, we sisters Elizabeth and Mary here lie down to sleep in hope of the resurrection," affixed by James I.

Queen Anne
Between January and July 1713, Anne was incapacitated, unable to walk due to her deteriorating health. Rumors of her imminent death circulated after she fell feverish and unconscious for hours during Christmas. Despite a brief recovery, Anne suffered a serious illness again in March, leading to her loss of confidence in Harley, whom she dismissed as Lord Treasurer on 27 July 1714. Struggling with failing health, Anne attended cabinet meetings until she was incapacitated by a stroke on 30 July. She passed away around 7:30 a.m. on 1 August 1714, finding release from a life of poor health and tragedy. She was laid to rest beside her husband and children in Westminster Abbey on 24 August.
