For anyone working in UE5 in 2022+ looking to do ObjectID passes: Use the Movie Queue and enable the Stencil feature to designate your layers then output using EXR (PNG sequence does NOT work for MatteID passes at the time or writing this)
After that, follow this tutorial. This is exactly what you need to do. Once you get to the ExtractR effect, select your Stencil layername outputted from UE5 from the first dropdown in the ExtractoR effect. Enable your Alpha.

How do you remove the background

For some reason when I create the matte layer and turn it to stencil, there is still a black background instead of a transparent alpha. I set it up exactly like you did with the stencil alpha, unmult, etc. but it doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions? And since I'm here, if I have some glossy white spots in my vfx that I want to spot color change, is there a suggested exr layer to work from? I know that last question might be too specific to my needs for you to help. Anyway, thanks for putting out these amazing tutorials!

Hi, I've got a high end pc mainly for 3d gpu rendering, but whenever I import exr files into AE and play it it crashes instantly... I dont know what could be the issue, if anyone knows how to fix this please let me know

@ ActionVFX What if a client sends me his Video as EXR ... how to i add the FX on it ... because if i load the video in its all Milky ... ? and how do i match and export the FX from AE for this.. is their like any good workflow ?

Handy tip with the alpha. For anyone worried about file size, twirl down the arrow in your output settings and select ‘Half-float’ and change compression to Piz-based wavelet. They are much more manageable. Looking forward to the rest of this series!

I haven't gotten in EXR passes yet, but my question is: If I render a scene with multiple passes ( say 4 ) will the file now be 4 x the size and take 4 x as long to render as a standard render?
