I disagree with your analysis of Twinkling Watermelon - he DID change the past, he rescued both his parents, his dad becoming/not becoming deaf is not the key (although he thought it was), the changes were more subtle butterfly effects and in helping them navigate their personal struggles and helping his dad's school life "twinkle" (which he did achieve).... in fact, if he had prevented the accident and dad not become deaf and that had been presented as our "happy ending", it would have been so dismissive to differently abled persons, the message is NOT deaf = failure/sad ending, but instead the much need what you make out it/how you rise out of adversity determines your success/failure - this I felt was more true to the theme of the drama!
