On Thursday 5 April 1453, Sultan Mohammed II sent an ultimatum to Emperor Constantine promising to save the lives of him and his citizens if he surrendered; he also promised that there would be no looting. But Constantine refused and Mehmet II, seeing that no response was forthcoming, the following day began the bombardment against the walls overlooking the Licino river, near the point considered the weakest of the walls of Constantinople.

Constantine personally presided over that area together with his imperial guards and appointed Giovanni Giustiniani Longo to the role of his aide, entrusting him with the most critical point of the walls, where the Genoese commander and his seven hundred soldiers fought with extreme courage.
In the early hours of Tuesday 29 May 1453 there was the last Ottoman attack: the battle lasted about six hours; Giovanni and his few surviving soldiers were defending the San Romano gate; the Ottoman soldiers were unable to penetrate, continually repelled. John and his men defended Constantinople with ferocity and courage.
Meanwhile, the battle continued, with the strenuous defense of Giustiniani Longo's soldiers, who were joined by all the Latins now loyal to him. But when the Janissaries - an elite unit of the Ottomans - arrived, John was hit at least twice and finally seriously (mortally wounded in the chest, he died after just 3 days). According to reports, his surviving men abandoned their positions, loading the wounded man onto a stretcher to transport him to the place where the ships were docked. The population and the other soldiers, seeing that sort of procession passing by, which carried away the last bastion and the hero of the battle, grieved and resigned themselves to defeat.

Constantine, seeing that there was nothing left to do, took off his imperial insignia and with his few surviving guards, according to legend, he threw himself into the fray, disappearing forever: none of those men would have saved their lives.
His funeral took place in Constantinople at the hands of the victorious Turkish leader, Mohammed II who, having learned of his death, organized a rite in his name and addressed his adversary with words of esteem: he said that that man alone was worth more of all the defenders of Constantinople put together, celebrating it with a Christian mass.

In the Greek tragedy there were also us Italians, and we will be there forever, a hug to our Greek brothers.

As an Orthodox Serb, it rips my heart to think that the most sacred Orthodox Christian city fell before a pillaging Barbarian turkic horde, plunging the entire peninsula of Haemus into half a millennium of darkness and bloodshed. They have spilled rivers of our Orthodox blood for centuries, enough to fill an entire sea. Entire peoples were extinguished, fake nations forged, cultures suppressed and defiled. We still suffer the consequences of the fall of the Constantinople to this day, many of our Orthodox lands occupied by turkish proxies despite all our defiance.

I take pride in fact that the last Roman-Byzantine emperor, Constantine XI Palaiologos Dragaš, was of Serbian origin and proudly died in battle defending the bastion of Orthodoxy, a worthy end to a true last Roman emperor.

Greetings and love to our Greek brothers. This isn't over as long as a foreign boot stands on our holy lands, and it is heartwarming to see that despite all the global decadence - yours and our children continue the Byzantine tradition and adopt the legacy and bequest our mother Byzantium left us.

Every victory by one side always results in sorrow and misery on another side. That was the order of the things then. Fight , kill, conquer and loot. Human beings never sought after making peace. Every nation had their eyes on the wealth of the other nations. To steal those, the ruling elite did not hesitate to send their people to battle front and did not care if they died. Everybody talks about Mehmet the Conqueror giving an end to the Eastern Roman Empire. But how many people from the Ottoman side were killed in the process, who talks about them. Most of those were probably of Greek origin as well. No to all wars, no to imperialism, no to occupations.
