The war in Afghanistan wasn't NATO. It was initially the United States alone that invaded Afghanistan, later forming the ISAF, which had involvement from some NATO countries. Most of the parties weren't even in NATO. The same was true of both Iraq wars. The US invaded on its own, building a coalition of countries from the region and elsewhere, most of whom were not in NATO. For instance Qadaffi and Assad supported the US War on Terror, and Assad's father gave assistance in the Gulf war. As a rule NATO is a defensive organization. The only reason it was involved in the Yugoslav conflict at all was the fact it was spilling over and threatened other European countries.

The founding members of NATO had been allies for centuries more or less, so if they weren't part of NATO they would have been part of something else. In any case, wars of aggression cannot involve NATO because article 5 is only invokable for defense. It literally cannot be used for attack.
