All those funnels. You think she was compensating for something.
ОтветитьThey weren't limited by conventional design.
ОтветитьFunnels (number, spacing, rake angle, and proportions) were an aesthetic element in ship design at the turn of the century. They are also related to engine power and therefore, to ship speed. There's a relationship with number of boilers but it's not one to one. Maybe this deserves another video? I think it's also related to steam conditions and whether you're burning coal or oil, but I haven't tried digging into the technical literature.
ОтветитьBuilder: "How many guns do you need?"
America: "Yes!"
Builder: "How many funnels do you need?"
France: "Yes!"🤣
When you try your best to have more funnels than main battery guns
ОтветитьWhich is worse?
"sold as scrap"
OR
"sunk as a target ship"?
That ship must be almost all engine. sm
ОтветитьFrench ships of this period remind me a lot of the Alliance "cruisers" from Firefly.
ОтветитьStill not quite as legendary as the unpronounceable French battleship Jauréguiberry!
ОтветитьWhen I saw the thumbnail I actually thought it was two three funnel ships with one ship just behind the other. But it is one ship with six funnels. Although I'll bet it could put up one hell of a smokescreen.
ОтветитьOne of my favourite six-funnelled armoured cruisers!
ОтветитьI always think that these ships with two groups of funnels look like they have welded the front 2/3 of one ship to the rear 2/3 of another.
ОтветитьAmazing that that design lasted until 1930…. Definitely has an 1890 vibe to it
ОтветитьInformative that this warship was named for a famous antisemite.
ОтветитьThank you, Drachinifel.
ОтветитьYou do the Lord's Work in the rational way you present French ships. Many mock them simply for being French.
ОтветитьThat was the result of the great funnel sale earlier that year.....
ОтветитьYou see the stifling bureaucracy that was the cause of their downfall in World War II here
ОтветитьDo not mean to be picky but Ernest is very much pronounced in French as « earnest » is in English. Many thanks for your work in any case 😊
ОтветитьChristening this ship as Enest Renan is french gallic and also briton (from Brittany) idea .But it's , before all, a truely republican atheistic/agnostic symbol. Think that the RN would have christened a similar cruise as Charles Darwin (Descendance of man), Edward Gibbon (Decine Roman Empire) or George Razer (The Golden Bough ) or an author which matches better the polical idea.
ОтветитьI don't know why I have a sudden craving for funnel cake...?
ОтветитьEven The Great Eastern would blush at that number of funnels
ОтветитьCould someone explain to me why you'd want to have both 7.6" and 6.5" guns? Doesn't that seem rather silly?
Or is like the US Cleveland class cruisers that did something vaguely similar and it actually made sense there.
I don't like the channels that use AI reproductions, so I subscribe to your channel a while ago!
ОтветитьYes, there's a poverty of funnels. Pity.
ОтветитьIts not a seagoing hotel this time... its a seagoing power station...
ОтветитьAwesome. I once again tender my request for a special on funnel design.
Keep up this awesome work. Thanks
Its in my top 3 best 6 funneled cruiser list!
ОтветитьAt least she succeeded as a target ship and fish reef.
ОтветитьGreat vid. Thank you
ОтветитьWhat an ugly ship, imo.
ОтветитьOh Come On.... 25K views and only 3k likes?
ОтветитьAnd I thought 4 funnels was too many...
ОтветитьFascinating!!
ОтветитьImagine seeing that silhouette through a periscope? Hmm, vat ship is zis?
ОтветитьYou can't spell "funnels" without "fun"! (I'll see myself out.)
ОтветитьAh yes, the First of the French Funnel Farms!
ОтветитьAnother incredibly weird French 🇫🇷 design, resembling a longer low hotel.
ОтветитьAs Ian from Forgotten Weapons says: "The French copy no one, and no one copies the French."
ОтветитьOne ship for the price of 2 !
ОтветитьI googled the ship to make sure I wasn't misled to think the thumbnail was a photoshop
ОтветитьMy ADHD likes these 5 minute vids!! 😛😖🤯😂
ОтветитьSunk as a target ship… The BIG question remains, did the funnels take any damage??
ОтветитьThis is Her Majesty's Ship Defiant. What ship are you?
ОтветитьI'm Canadian, so I'll begin my comment by saying, : "I'm sorry to have to say, but... you so totally screwed the correct pronunciation of this name that my ears are hurting! And, maybe even bleeding!"
Try this: Ernest is pronounced like the German name Ernst. Only with an E between the n and the s... Ern"E"st Rommel. (The Romnel was planted there to remind you of who was called Ernst). Now, the Renan part is more difficult. Pay attention. Renan means "Rheiner" from the Rhein. With a name like that, the guy was probably from Alsace or Loraine. It's very Germanic for a French name. So, Renan. In French, and I know you have a good basic in French, when the letter A is followed by an N, the N is not pronounced, but the A is nasalized. If you are not able to nazalise an A, you are better pronouncing Renan as you read it. Ern'e'st Renan. Ernest Renā.
Sorry for the lecture. But after soooo many years listening to you butchering French names, I had to speak! Despite thar, I am, and will be in the future, a great fan of the channel.
Glad the old outro is still there, very nostalgic.
ОтветитьHey Vern, I got a warship named in my honor…
ОтветитьDamn you and your oddly beautiful designs, France!
ОтветитьPinned post for Q&A :)
