I am just beginning to venture out from straight line quilting. I have only been quilting for about four years now. I have been watching videos like yours but this video gives more confidence to try and that I CAN free motion quilt with practice. I'm always afraid I'll ruin my quilt! I like how you describe the steps and explain the techniques in detail. It is extremely helpful to a newbie. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise!

Do you know if it’s possible to do free motion on a walking foot machine? I tried just leaving the feed dog up, but I wasn’t happy with the tension. The top tension was a bit too loose.

Since there are 3 “foot components” on a walking foot machine (the bottom feeder, the top feed foot, and the “vertical only” foot that encircles the needle), maybe it’s possible to just remove the bottom and top walking feeders, leaving the “vertical only” foot?

Finally! Someone who answered every question I had about FMQ on a standard home sewing machine!! Your 2 videos about beginning FMQing are fantastic! I am in the process of making a memory quilt for a dear friend who lost her brother and her horse within a couple months of each other. I had learned about quilting from my grandmother - back when treadle machines were still common. Did I mention that I’m 75 yrs old? 😂 This is the first real quilt I’ve made all by myself, and my sewing experience has been limited to mending & replacing zippers. Because my quilt incorporates a panel with a mountain scene in the middle with photos of my friend and her brother and horse (that I printed on fabric) going around the edges of the panel, I especially want to do FMQ in the large panel rather than making blocks with vertical & horizontal lines. Your clear instructions, and tips will save me hours, and my sanity! Thank you sooooo much!

❤ Love the idea of adding extra on the top so you can practice FMQ and test tension. Love testing the tension with that fabric too. Such a simple idea, but one I had not thought of. Both tips are BRILLIANT! ❤

I love this series - I jumped in with a Bargello lap quilt and have been having so many tension and birds nest issues. I kind of 'knew' that there was all these extra things like the quilting foots and FMQ, but just assumed I could get by. Which I did, for the most part, but this series has helped explain so much - the feed dogs, why quilting feet are useful, basting and what happens if you don't, all these wonderful tips! I can't wait to get back into my quilting tonight and apply these lessons. :D

Hello 😊 I am about to FMQ a quilt that has very thick intersections. I’m terrified to cut threads to flatten. Will my stitching unravel and open with wear? Will I break needles trying to quilt over the lumps? And finally, will the pressed top seams wander out of place, over the batting, while quilting? Oh how much I would appreciate some experienced advice. Thank you!
