# I LOVE this man's VALUES & SKILLS. IF my Dear Old DADDY was still alive, WE would enjoy watching this program about Dick Proenneke , together : ) : ) My Dad had a fierce independent nature & similar approach to life.

I was at his cabin last week.

What a beautiful way to live. I wish I had the nerve and abilities to do the same but I’m a product of modern society and defiantly don’t have the skills this amazing man did.

I can't help but think that Dick is still there at his cabin enjoying the views and his wildlife friends...

What he was doing in one way was not unique, this is how many lived prior to this last century, except for his camera. He was unique because he nearly completely forsake all modern comforts that came along in the last Century, being aware of their trappings. “The sound of a motor stills the sound of nature”. Are his journals available to be read?

I'm an ol tough Alaskan , and this episode brought a tear to my eyes. Rest in peace Dick , You ol Sourdough.

The park service and BLM have burnt down most all of the old cabins in Alaska that were built by men just like Dick. It's all about control, not service.

Lucky man who knew how free the country actually was and used his time n effort to enjoy actual freedom.... You can't do this today because it isn't allowed or by breaking some made up law that forces you to buy the land with zoning permits etc......

The importance of making Dick’s story as public as possible is beyond any one’s ability to understand till having the whole tale to let simmer in your soul for a time.

Imagine not being "starved for attention" like the people of today.

spend 30 years alone in the nature what a nice life ! but when times comes you have get back to ( normal life ) because ages ... in a city that should be hard i spend only 2 weeks a years alone in the wood during the hunting season and when i come back to the civilisation im always sad to leave the wood .. he may be not there anymore but im sure is soul is still in that cabin and will be for ever !

you speak correct people do not really know the value of what is life ...and in now days to too many humans love dressing themselves of earthly materials and a custom to believing is about get all you see at stores for the kitchen,living rooms , garage, luxury

ONLY A HANDFUL OF PEOPLE COULD ENDURE THIS LAND. THEY'D HAVE TO HAVE SKILLS BEYOND HUMAN CONSTRUCTION, HUNTING, HAVE TO BE RESOURSFUL TO A FAULT!!

We have more people living the old days in the desert with no airplanes bringing then food or news. The true survivors of America.

Even the birds remembered him as their neighbor...and a true friend of nature.

I can’t describe how amazing this man is. I’ve just learned of him recently and I am in awe of him. What an absolutely incredible man.

I find it ironic a colonizer can come to a natives land and they keep his living space and considering it a historical site !? The audacity of white ppl is astounding ! All men die, few of us really live....
This man really lived....
I've been fortunate enough to spend a good portion of my life in the mountains, and I've seen sights that few men ever see outside of the pages of a National Geographic or the shows like Wild Kingdom....
And while I haven't done as much as Dick Proenneke, I've seen a Bald eagle swoop down from it's perch/nest, not 10' over my head to snatch a 3 lbs trout out of the water of a high mountain lake, 20 to 30 feet from my boat just after the sunrise....
Or a baby fawn being licked clean by the Doe that's just dropped it at birth....
Or watched a hen turkey hobbling around in her broken wing act, only to look down and find her chicks climbing over my feet like a jungle gym...
And I backed off to let her collect her babies, unmolested....
I've been lucky enough to see country that's left me in awe, as well as the animals that call it home....
Or the sight of flecks of gold winking up out of the black sand in my pan fresh from the stream....
So I do count myself among those men that not only die, but have actually lived before hand....

It brings me warmth to know this man didn’t have to see the destruction of Canada in the last decade.

It’s boggling my brain how he even had the calories to build it.

He was living the dream.

Did he mine all that oil to refine and manufacture the polyester in his clothes? Did he also manufacture his own medicine? His own paper mill and pen factory? Presume an old guy needes glasses too, quite the engineer

What a incredible human being,if every man lived like this man did we would be in true paradise .

God it is to bad that a man like this even has to die.

A tribute to the restorative effects of hard work, No drugs no hospitals average 9 plus miles of walking per day and all that hand sawing! Try getting your firewood with a hand saw and an ax, unreal.
