Setting up my opnsense edge server presently. Using a Dell 3040, upgraded to i7 6700, 16g ram, 128 ssd added a ngff to 2.5gbe card, 4x usb3 A to 2.5gbe adapters. It's OP to say the least. Nginx server, multiple vpn tunneling, intrusions detection, vlans galore. It's a rabbit hole for sure when you have the cpu power to use it all.

Surely the power draw from a PC would be way more than a out of box dedicated device?

Ah 😂 you cant just use ady hardware to make a router lol you nerd to take in the consideration you wan speed and how many devices need a connection at the same time to the Wan /internet for best practices it is recommended to us a multi port card why simple to have a network balance system so each device has the same bandwidth if your machine has a powerful fsb speed then best practice is to make an dynamic network balancing based on your inbound speed, ah if you opt for an x64 system then for network use an dual cpu server hardware and don't use hardware oder that 5 years because the performance will suck , and , shore you can also use windows as long as it is professional for workstations or enterprise, or even a server operating system , but you can go also sor arm64 setup, as it has the lowest power consumption ,

ISP-provided or store-bought routers are actually 4-in-1 devices: Modem is the 4th device. And the advantage of a 4-in-1 device is that it only requires 1 power connection and not 4 hence reducing cable mess.

Anyone who has any experience with networking will recognize clickbait you made with thumbnail. Those LinkSys routers are indestructible. Finding anything higher quality is a challenge.

I've been using pfSense for almost two years now, definitely won't go back to a home-based router ever again. pfSense with pfBlockerNG, it's a match made in heaven!

The explanation of bridging here is wrong.
The example gives a diagram of routing (devices on different subnets with the 3rd number being different. I'm assuming a /24 for each subnet) and then says bridging which is where all the traffic coming into one port goes out the others, bridging is like switching (moving traffic around) but it's more akin to shouting across a busy room where switching is more akin to being in a booth

home computers weren't designed and built to be running 24/7 like a router. but instead you might use a small server though .

Would love a how to (in depth)! I just dug out my 12 year old HP, gonna get all my old files backed up (or recovered lol) and turn it into my house server for work. My Brother and I are going into business together, and he lives downstairs so it'll help to not only have that as a server, but if I could also turn it into a decent router that's even better. If not I have a 9 year old laptop that'd do the trick probably if I'd have to keep the 2 separate.

USB C powered notebook mainboards with M.2 storage (like Framework mainboards when they start aging and getting replaced by 13th gen Intel or AMD based boards) would be awesome for this. POE to USB C adapter so no extra power cord is needed if you have a POE switch, and another simple usb c to ethernet adapter, and good to go.

So i can just build a PC and turn it into a router? How good! But do i have to use an intel CPU? Or is there different part that has to be intel for the "controller"? Would an AMD cpu work? And yes like others have said below, could you please do a dedicated video on this with more detail on the parts to use etc. Thanks LMG!

I won't lie.. I'm a bit disappointed.. although you gave info, an in-depth setting one up would have been a much more helpful/useful video.. I need to find a follow-along video on doing this.. just telling us what to do. isn't much help.. I mean I can tell you how to build a nuclear reactor, but unless I show you step by step. odds are your not gonna build one .. LOL

There's only one problem: you can put router on a shelf, it looks cute unlike a PC with many many wires dangling around and creating a mess

why there are no any x86 sold routers?

He most likely did not mention a modem because many ISP are offering fiber optic services that do not use a modem.

Getting your isp to bridge their network device is the hardest step in the process. Most require a business level service and won't bridge consumer service.
Bridging passes the public ip address to the network instead of NATting it to a private ip address and using dhcp to assign addresses.

This is all fine and dandy but he should have mentioned power consumption.
Dedicated routers have really low power consumption when compared to any laptop or PC... And a router stays on 24/7, so going from 5/10W to 40/60w is quite the tradeoff.

Also some routers don't rely on the CPU for some routing and switching tasks but rely on ASICs that are way faster and a lot more efficient at working.
