Man even getting the hand gestures in there. That is some fantastic detail. Thanks for making this video, i'd have never know what to look into or which sources to reference.

Best comment in the video "I don't know why someone would want to ward off pliant virgins." that got a solid chuckle out of me.

Imagine a HBO Rome spiritual successor series set in the 500s AD, in like Ostrogothic Italy or the Burgundians, or Constantinople... Ok it would probably be pretty sad if it showed the Gothic Wars, Plague of Justinian and other disasters. There were a ton of Saints though!

In italy we have records of dude going town to town announcing new laws or taxes as late as the XVII century.. given the mostly analphabet population..
From new laws or taxes to announcements of saints/important visitor is not that big of a stretch.. especially in very important cities full of merchants and traders of all kind..

In the 1970s, I was picking grapes in France, and on Saturday mornings, some guy would turn up in his van and start reading the news through his megaphone.
And in 2008, I was in a tiny Japanese fishing village, and at 6am every morning, the loudspeakers all around would announce the weather (for the fishermen), and the day's news.

That's all - carry on.

I believe the exaggerated nature of the actors hand gestures was so that less keen (but still well educated) eyes could pick up on it.
A more subtle and natural expression would be noticed by scholars and enthusiasts right away (and would certainly be a fun easter-egg for them), but viewers who are less academic might not immediately identify all of it.
Exaggerated motions stood out as significant, and allowed even casual fans to understand that it is deliberate and repeated throughout the show.
This series was full of that kind of thing. moments that were subtle enough to be fun for anyone who knows a thing or two, but obvious enough to spark a little curiosity in anyone who might care to learn

Very well done- this is a good video. I agree. I think it highly probably that an orator in a busy market place would use exaggerated gestures to gain and hold attention.

Do yiu think that Quintilian's gestures were developed in Cicero's time or would they be anachronistic in a text set before 33 CE

Victorian era factories employed some people to read out loud newspapers for the factory workers. Seems the tradition of someone screaming out the news to crowds of people only really stopped when radio and television took over.

God I hope they have a character like him in the Elder Scrolls 6!

They could function like the radio announcers in the Fallout games (Three Dog! Oooowww!) announcing news reports of things like the quests the PC completes, and give more context on things like political situations, people, and upcoming events.

I wish that someone who knows Roman culture and loved the HBO series “Rome” would make a video breaking down the opening credits, what do the symbols mean, what stories and myths are depicted, etc. I recognize some of the images but not most and I want someone to tell me what they all mean.

Game of Thrones should have had a newsreader
It makes more sense for the Iron Throne to have a pompous blowhard spewing out its BS instead of the master of whispers' "little birds"
No one listens to street children unless they're carrying newspapers and shouting EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT

One of the best things that can happen is when historically accurate things also appear funny, so they appeal to the two different types of people. Or if not completely accurate, at least any modifications are justifiable. History nerds will appreciate the accuracy, other people can appreciate the funniness and even look deeper into the facts.
