Can you compare por-15 to other products claiming to do the same thing?

Many years ago I tried to remove the rust from a metal patio table using what was sold to me as naval jelly, thogh not the variety of it that you show here. I was not impressed. It did not seem to do the job all that well. In more recent years, I have used a product called Extend, which comes in both spray cans and in a bottle, but every single time I've bought the bottle I'd use some of it and the second half or so that was still in the container solidified completely, making it unusable. Not sure what's in it offhand.

Great content but a major omission is you MUST manage problems with flash rusting! After you use an acidic solution it will quickly flash rust again unless you neutralize it with a base solution such as baking soda and water.

I use vinegar a lot for rust removal, and the key to making it work, is heat. Same with CLR. I just sit the glass of vinegar, in some hot water, the hotter the better. Microwave or stovetop, would be ok for heating it as well. I find it works 2-3x faster than at room temp.

I know its been years, but is the Krud Kutter listed in the amazon link the correct one? It opens a page for Rust-oleum Krud Kutter Cleaner Degreaser and that product doesnt say anything about removing rust. Thanks!

Now for the sake of making a video, these guys all pour out the used chemicals. Where? The toilet, the neighbor's fence line? A gutter? The back yard (nope)? They're polluting the planet for the sake of making a useless video. Information on rust removers is universally available without polluting the environment. All of that stuff goes somewhere. Also, can't they afford to buy all that junk they're cleaning? Bad bad bad. The most ironic thing they ALL do is put them on a grinder brush after the video which is the first thing sensible ppl would do, not trying to push a boulder up hill.

30% white vinegar works better than 5%. Also, bottle/can (ready to drink) coke will not work as well as the straight syrup used in fountain drink machines.

My go-to for serious rust removal has been muriatic acid; however, be advised that once your parts is done with the muriatic acid treatment, you need to neutralize any residual acid that remains on the part. Make a solution of water and baking soda and go over your part with that or soak the part in it. If not, your part will rust again and even worse. Follow up with rinsing with clean water and drying. Also, store muriatic acid outside away from any metal tools and machinery. The stuff is very volatile and I learned the hard way when bare steel in my garage was getting flash rust on it when I had a plastic one gallon jug of muriatic in there. That jug was inside a plastic five gallon pail with a gasketed snap on lid and the fumes manage to escape past those barriers. Inside the five gallon pail was a yellow residue from the fumes that leaked. Phosphoric is much safer and will leave a phosphate coating on your steel that somewhat protects is from corrosion.

The instructions on most of these products specifically state that you should leave the items immersed for 24hrs. Not sure why you bothered to test the difference at much shorter intervals, or in a non-immersed situation.

I currently use POR-15 Rust remover, it appears to be the same product as the Evapo-Rust I previously used. I throw parts in the jug, and just leave them alone for a couple of days. Always removes 100% of all of the rust, plus you just run the liquid through a strainer, pour it back in the jug, and use it again.

Edit: Just to add, No, it doesn't work better on lime and scale. It is a completely useless product.

Remember, the muratic acid needs to be neutralized after the soaking. Baking soda and water will do the trick. Rinse with water and blow dry with air, then paint or oil for protection against rusting back up.

Evapo-rust needs 24 hours to work the same as Krud Kutter. The difference between them is that Evapo-Rust can be had here in Saskatchewan for about $9/L, Krud Kutter costs $22.20/L, so KK is about 2.5 times the cost. Actually Evapo-Rust was just on sale for $6.45/L, so almost 1/4 the cost. I use it on my rusty trucks (frame, undercarriage).

One thing to consider with this is, Muriatic acid also attacks the steel, so you would not want to use it on any type of nuts and bolts, particularly structural. I believe it'll also rust worse afterwards.
Phosphoric products like Ospho would be better, or use one of the less harsh ones you tested.
The fumes from Muriatic will also cause other stuff in your shop to rust, too.

Ответить
@stevenaughton9372
@stevenaughton9372 - 18.09.2023 07:09

Evaporust works without being acidic. The rest clean by acid, which will dissolve some of the metal too (especially muriatic).

I can testify that white vinegar does work but it takes a while, but it's really cheap, like less than $2.00 a gallon last time I bought it. I once used it to remove rust form a dutch oven and it took several days, but if you're not in a hurry it's great and it is pretty much harmless. I enjoyed this one. Keep the good stuff coming.

We used muriatic acid in the Navy to remove oils from cable when we were making poured sockets. I knew it would be the best but I also knew if you let it sit, it will eat whatever you're trying to clean.

Ответить
@flapjackson6077

Evapo Rust isn’t the strongest rust remover. Krud Kutter contains phosphoruc acid, as does naval jelly. Muriatic acid is the strongest remover, followed by phosphoric acid.

BUT, Evapo Rust IS the best rust remover if you have time to let it soak a day or two. It’s Ph neutral, safe to handle, and doesn’t eat away good metal. The key is giving it time to work.

I use muriatic and phosphoric acid, but only when I’m in a hurry, and will be monitoring what I’m working on.
When I’m not in a hurry, one to two days (or longer) soaking in Evapo Rust will do a perfect job, and not cause pitting or destruction to good metal.

ive restored albrecht keyless chucks and Kwik switxh tool holders eith evaporust. very gentle yet effective. rescued apparently useless machine tooling to a very usable condition without damaging sny of the underlaying steel. absolutely amazing stuff, but you HAVE to take a nylon bristle to it after soaking..its completely nuetral and safe to handle..the oxides will slough right off... i STRONGLY reccomend it.
