The reason" in kindergarten why we don't teach "ice cream" is because the i in ice cream is a long vowel sound which is /ai/ in kk phonics so this is confusing. Personally, I don't mind teaching the word ice cream if they also learn the words airplane, east, oasis and unicorn but most teachers want students to learn short voewel sounds so they can go on to read words like cat, pen, pin, dog and bun. They want students to sound out words so igloo is great but island with its silent s is bad. Iguana is also a bit confusing because it is a Spanish word so the i is a long e sound but this is /i/ in kk phonics. A lot of students can't hear the difference between the short i and long e sounds anyway. It takes a long time for students to distinguish the short vowel sounds so asking them to also learn long vowel sounds in kindergarten may be a bit much. Distinguishing all the different vowel sounds can be daunting. I once said "bat bet bit bot but bait beat bite boat boot beaut" to kids in grade 6 and they found the list entirely incomprehensible. The students need to develop good listening skills or they will never pronounce correctly. Meanwhile, most foreigners learning Chinese cannot distinguish the tones.
ОтветитьGreat video with deeply insightful information on every day speech most could never hope to learn in a class room. I've heard some of these phrases in conversation and had no idea what they meant.
ОтветитьI reeeeally like this context of learning from a social media post. It’s really informative and relevant but also super fun! You rock 💜
ОтветитьI love Shuo’s videos
Ответить我曾经是一名英语老师。一个五岁的孩能够读懂宗教迫害这个问,但她不知道它是什么意思
ОтветитьIgloo and iguana are common words on English flashcards for the letter “i” in America. 😊
ОтветитьAs an overseas born and bred (who cannot read n write Chinese) I find your presentations wonderfully refreshing. More so in the context of present-day Chinese Culture.
Ответить🙏🙏🙏❤️
ОтветитьSpeaking of 学霸, I would like to introduce it a little bit.
Before it has become a popular word online, 学霸 actually means repressive academic leaders. During Cultral Revolution, 红卫兵 constantly 打倒 the so called 学霸, who are usually the leading forces of academic researchers all over mainland China, as they represents the so called 臭老九, the rotten scholars, in the eyes of 红卫兵.
Now 学霸 is one of the online terms that represent groups of students with different studying states.
学霸: Grade A students
学神: Talented grade A students spending no effort on studying
学渣: Grade D students
学酥: Hard working students (who are believed to get Grade A easily) but fail exams
Wow incredible culture but still kids should be playing.

ОтветитьYour approach is very relevant to contemporary life, aka it’s realistic. I like it very much! Your pace and style in bringing along your listener is very good, not too fast n not too slow. I like the humour and your take on things, makes this whole vid more interesting too. Keep up the good work!

ОтветитьHi I’m a kindergarten teacher, I taught both english and Chinese language to kids. Regarding why the five year old kid writing igloo and iguana is acceptable, why? Because in kindergarten, teachers teach the short vowel sounds first before teaching long vowel sound. Taking letter Ii as an example, the short vowel Ii is read as /yi/ and long vowel Ii is read as /ai/. Short vowels are taught as early as preschool (2yrs old) but long vowels are taught if not kinder-1 (4yrs old) then in kinder-2(5yrs old) So even though not a lot of people know igloo and iguana, the child will write the first thing he/she thought of which is iguana and igloo because it was what he/she learned for 2-3yrs already.
ОтветитьGlobalization has shown them the rest of the world can be successful or fully content without the need for cut-throat competition and obsession over meaningless things like exam scores and rote studying that have a poor correlation with actual success or longterm happiness. Weibo is filled with nothing but people talking about their gaokao scores and news outlets praising gaokao scores of some disadvantaged youth or another. It's shockingly devoid of many other topics. You are not born for your gaokao score. It doesn't define you. And even on a macro level, it doesn't mean success or dominance. Places like Japan have just as much focus on studying as any other Asian country, and work long hours with no work/life balance, and yet have been stuck in a recession for over 30 years and now with rising inflation. No new companies, no innovation, and little improvement within society and living standards. Nor have they rated themselves highly with their general satisfaction in life. China is slowing down and is following after them.
ОтветитьGreat content!

Great idea to make a content like this. Very helpful
ОтветитьBut what if I wanna communicate freely with my Chinese friends about the government and other things who are not pro government? Where can I write without being controlled in the messages? If a Chinese App exist like this let us know.
ОтветитьGreat video and interesting slang!
Ответить这个视频太棒了。我常常不明白中国人在微信上写什么。
ОтветитьThe girl was 5 and already knows how to write? Why? She should only play. Playing is the best way to learn about life. Good video. Thanks
Ответить太巧了! When you asked about what words I would pick that start with an I, I immediately said aloud, "Iguana and Igloo". I've been studying Chinese for two years and happen to know Igloo because I read an article in Chinese about Eskimos, but I have absolutely no clue what iguana is... 可见那个五岁的小孩比我聪明哈哈。。。
ОтветитьThis is great and honestly very needed. I find that so much of what I don't understand online is slang, and yet its everywhere. This video is very helpful.
ОтветитьGreat video. I know most of the HSK vocabulary, read and listen to modern Chinese novels (mostly 网络小说) without much problem, can read news articles with some dictionary help, etc…but from the moment I started switching to native apps for social media (微博,知乎,etc…) it was quite eye opening how much more there is to learn. Love your in depth videos like this — particularly how you deep you go on the underlying concept. Like I’ve seen 鸡 everywhere and understood it from context, but had no idea how it got that meaning until you explained it. Thanks!
Ответить谢谢你!
