Unlike the lung irritants chlorine and phosgene, mustard gas was a vesicant (similar to lewisite) that produced large blisters on any area of contact. Particularly severe blisters emerged when uniforms were soaked in mustard gas.

Mustard gas is Sulfur Mustard, it is not the same. Mixing bleach and ammonia does NOT make mustard gas. Mixing ammonia and chlorine doesn't even make chlorine gas, it makes chloramines. A crazy amazing disinfectant that is water soluble and used for treating drinking water. Don't breath it and it can explode. Mixing bleach with certain cleaners containing certain acids can release chlorine gas. Normally it's hard to mix them in a dangerous way, but if cleaning in a small area like a bathroom or if you are exposed over long periods of time like a janitor, then it can be very bad. Best to just not mix bleach with anything other than water.

Once upon a time I was a Naval person just out of Boot Camp and assigned to a training command. One night I was heading out of the barracks and passed a room with the door open and noxious fumes spilling forth. It seems the occupants had mixed ammonia and bleach to strip the wax from their floor. I explained the dangerousness of their cleaning regimen and left with all haste.

As a cleaner she would've had to do a w.h.i.m.i.s. course. It's a hazardous materials course. If not then being able to read...both of the bottles would've had safety instructions.

Yes you are right. It's definitely a lack of training. If you're taught to clean something you're told to follow regulations. I don't know what they have in America but in the UK we have COSHH
The Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. Every employment has to have their employees learn it and provide information on it.

People always want to quit before being fired, but sometimes it’s actually better to get fired. You can’t get unemployment checks if you quit! Obviously research your options, weigh the pros and cons, don’t just take my word for it, but don’t let your pride stop your blessings 😂

She made chloramine gas, not chlorine gas or mustard gas. Many people incorrectly call the mixture of bleach and ammonia chlorine gas, but it actually produces chloramine gas. However, people usually understand what is meant and is a whole lot closer than calling the combination of ammonia and bleach, mustard gas. Chloramine gas and mustard gas are two very different chemicals and have vastly different affects on the body.

Usually there is a hell of a lot more reason than one for termination . So this is what she's willing to share as a reason for termination - how do we know it wasn't an attendance, performence, or because she likes to post ( apparently) say something about a coworker or the company ( as they can be a little touchy over that ) ??? Just wondering

The fact that she didn't know not to mix different cleaning supplies indicates two major issues at this establishment. One, a serious lack of training. Two, the MSDS materials are not posted, which must be posted to comply with OSHA regulations.

flash forward til the next day and the hazmat team was raiding the bottle room. 😂

I didn’t get fired they laughed it off and just told me not to do that again.

It won’t happen accidentally, she probably heard she made a WW1 gas and she instantly thought it’s mustard gas, it was most likely chlorine gas which was also used in WW1…bleach contains chlorine

On one hand, the instructions are usually printed directly on the bottle, along with at least one warning not to mix with other chemicals. On the other hand, people are incredibly stupid to the point where it's a surprise they're still alive. They should fire both her and the manager. She's genuinely a danger to herself and others, as well as just a walking liability. The manager failed to do his job which is assuming as much about every employee until proven otherwise.

Mixing Pine-Sol (a common household cleaner) and bleach can produce chlorine gas, not mustard gas and there are not the same thing. Chlorine gas is highly toxic and can cause respiratory issues, eye irritation, and other health problems. Mustard gas, on the other hand, is a chemical warfare agent that is much more complex and dangerous.
