Elvis and the Beatles had a fierce dispute in the early and mid-70s and at the end of the decade it ended with Elton John and the Eagles competing. Michael Jackson led the entire 80s and a little of the 90s. Eminem literally took control of the 2000s for himself. We can agree that these 6 singers made an impact on the history of music, marking each generation.

I think that the giant sells of today artist need to be put into perspective. The globalisation and internet has big part in it. So the fact that beatles for example had in point in 70s almost 4 million is mindblowing. Also the longevity of elton john is superb.

Until the end of the 70's the list goes well, with some exceptions. From 1980 onwards it's just rubbish, with few exceptions.
