Hello once again! It's your favorite nurses again Ang&Nat. We're here to provide everyone with updates regarding the current pandemic we are all facing. We're sorry to say that it has not gotten any better after our first video. Every time we go to work there are new updates and even more, positive patients admitted to the hospital. The numbers are overwhelming, the last update we have (for the hospital we work for) is a total of 480 positive patients. That doesn't include the many more that are still waiting for their test results to come back. Every day more and more units/floors are being closed down to be completed dedicated to COVID patients and we can see how this is starting to become an even larger issue. Keep in mind, the numbers that we see on the news and that we are getting through the hospital are nothing compared to the number of people that are just quarantining themselves at home and managing their own symptoms. Those individuals don't ever get tested and just recover. The number of people that actually contracted this virus is way bigger than we will ever know!!
The issue we continue to face is the lack of protective equipment available to healthcare professionals. In our last video, we mentioned that we were running low on masks and we still are. According to Gov. Cuomo, 11 public hospitals only have a week left of supplies. That is very scary to think of because how are we supposed to continue to care for patients as well as protect ourselves and stop the spread?! We have some nurses using garbage bags as gowns and bandanas as masks. We are so low on supplies and money is not the reason, it literally is just the lack of material around to make this equipment. They are even changing some of the hand soap in our hospital and it is making a lot of nurse's hands irritated. Not sure what happened there and why now all of a sudden we are running low on the soap!
There is a lack of equipment everywhere and it is also causing nurses to feel like there is too much exposure happening! Sometimes nurses/PCAs get gowned up to go into a patient's room to only find out that that patient pressed to call button by mistake. That causes equipment to be wasted as well as an exposure that could have been avoided. Things like this happen all the time.
Last video we mentioned that our hospital closed down 3-4 units dedicated to COVID patients. At this point they are up to 11 units. That is a huge increase for just one week. There is also a strict no visitor policy.
On a brighter note, there are a lot of things our hospital and business around us are doing to help. One of those things is FREE PARKING FOR NURSES! This is great because it's one less thing we would have to worry about when driving to work. It also limits the number of nurses that have to take public transportation to work and therefore less exposure. We are also getting discounts on food, hotels, and scrubs. Thank you for that!!
I know these are tough times but maybe there are somethings we can also take advantage of while a lot of people are working from home. Spend time with your family, pick up something new, finish something you haven't had to the time to finish and also learn more about yourself! Guys I really hope this starts looking up soon, as nurses we are really worried about what our future holds but we will always be here to try to brighten up the mood and at least put a smile on some of our views faces.
If you guys have any questions or comments please don't hesitate to drop them down below. Thanks for watching again and don't forget to subscriiiibeee!! Stay safe, in and take care everyone!! Until next time...
UPDATE: Just finished our shift for the day and after one of the masks we got at the beginning of my shift dropped on the floor, we struggled to find another mask on the unit. We seriously couldn't believe it. All of this happening is seriously causing us to have major anxiety.
