I wish you would do a video about SETI's "A Sign in Space." Even just a discussion, whatever you have to say about it. It is weird how nobody is talking about this. There is little press coverage in the US and there's almost nothing on YT, other than videos on the project's channel. My friends and I didn't even hear about this until more than 2 months after the transmission.

I used to be obsessed with astronomy, then I realized how much of the "science" was wild ass guesses and based on conjecture. I would be taught one thing in school and then read contradictory information in a journal. I have seen theories come and go, and be replaced with new theories. All of them based on junk science. These exoplanets are not 100% confirmed. "We think there might be something there." Then they go off and paint wild pictures of exotic planets, but all of it is guesswork. Call me old fashioned, but I like to have concrete evidence, not science fiction fantasy.

If we did get to a point where we could see exoplanets. Couldn’t we just look at them like we look at stars to see if they wobble due to having a moon?

David! It’s time for a new video, always get so excited when a new cool worlds podcast comes out. There’s a new exoplanet that’s been found that could have life on it, as you will know! Need to know your thoughts 😀💪👍😎

The only reason we are looking for exomoons, is because we are destroying our planet. Exoplanets are too big and have too high gravity for us to live on them.

I'm with you, David/Cool Worlds...

Why do science? No point in looking/asking questions? 'Sheer curiosity.' Unforeseen positive circumstances/discoveries/advancements/etc. in doing so.
Artificial satellites, thus technosignatues, might also be detectable (maybe even via their signals) as a side-effect of being able to see exomoons.
Certainly exomoons are a good reason to enhance our technology for viewing distant worlds. Enhancing tech would go a ways toward being able to view other cosmological phenomena.
Indeed, exomoons around large planets that are tidally-locked could 'unlock' the moon around the sun, thus giving it all of the sun, even if its parent was locked, thus opening up larger possibilities for life. Yes, Titan and Callisto are apparently ok, radiation-wise.
"...so, sorry, Pink Floyd, there's no such thing as the dark side of the moon..." ~ David

Could a magnetosphere of a gas giant conceivably be strong enough to protect its moons from an active dwarf star? If so, red dwarfs may not be bad places to look for ET.

@CoolWorldsLab Have you ever considered exoplanet J1407b as an exomoon candidate (or any other exoplanet with substantial ring system)? Would it be reasonable to assume the gaps in between the rings of such exoplanets would have also coalesced into exomoonlets/exomoons as in Saturn's case?

Isn't it so, that an exomoon even receives similar effects from its planet as our Earth receives from our moon - tidal waves and such?

Hey Prof. Kipping, since You're in particular interested in the discovery of exomoons, and because I had a promising idea in regard to such a goal, I wondered and wanted to ask if You've already considered or have otherwise become aware of the conceptual hypothetical possibility of detecting a large enough exo-icemoon orbiting a sufficiently large exo-gas-giant capable of squeezing such moon strong enough so that the icemoon were to violently outgas water into space via hydrothermal vents, given that the sizes of the regions in space covered in such events can be several times larger than the icemoon itself?

Speaking of exomoons, i was thinking can those super Jupiter's or Saturn's that are tidally locked on one side to there host stars. Act as a moon for planets in the habitable zone of those stars. Providing night time and daytime life cycles, affecting the high and low water tide and weather patterns, similar to what happens on earth, maybe these planets in the habitable zone don't need moons

Given all the amazing things we've learned about the moons in our own solar system over the past few decades, and also given how much of our exoplanet study seems to be concentrated around red dwarf systems, it only makes sense for the location and study of exomoons to be given a high priority. I certainly hope that one day soon, you and your team will finally get some quality JWST time!

When we talk about earth-like planets, what are the criteria for this designation? From what I’ve seen, it seems like a misnomer. Perhaps “potentially habitable” planets? Or is that less “sexy” for those who find these projects….? Question, though, regarding magnetic fields. Do we know which exoplanets have them or don’t have them? How do we know this?

Thanks, love the videos and what you’re doing on the platform!

Just as discovering exo-planets changed our understanding of the search for extraterrestrial life and cosmological mechanics, discovering exo-moons could have a similar impact.

When people speak of photographing exo-planets I recall how the opening lines of War Of The Worlds "No one would have believed that our world was being watched by intelligences greater than our own....across the gulf of space, intellects vast and cruel and unsympathetic regarded our planet with envious eyes...and slowly, and surely, drew their plans against us." could be applied to our own machinations.

Our own solar system would suggest moons make up the majority of potentially habitable worlds. If we care about finding life, not looking at moons would be absurd.
