People have told me its okay to ask for donations since its a community service but still I feel like accepting donations will pressure me with the obligation to account for every single penny and where it goes. Does GoFund me not enforce accountability? Sounds like people can ask for absurd shit and people still donate for whatever reason..

When I was 16, working at a Guitar Center, I was pulled over on the highway going 94 in a 55 zone. The cop kinda laughed at me and my mom’s crappy car, saying “I wouldn’t have thought a Chevy Celebrity would go that fast. Good luck with the ticket.” I never said anything to my parents, I just showed up in traffic court with every last penny I had to my name to pay off the fine. When it was my turn, the judge looked me up and down and said “I can’t believe the officer didn’t take your license away, you’re the kind of kid who needs to be taught this lesson the hard way.” (She was right, btw.) She ordered a fine for just under 500 bucks including court costs to be paid before I was allowed to leave, and thankfully I had brought juuuust enough to cover it. I thought I was in the clear. Thought I was smooth. My parents would never know! And thennn a week or so later the court sent my receipt in the mail and my mother got it, opened it, grounded the schnit out of me anyway, and took away my driving privileges. She said if I’d have only just told her about it instead of lying or hiding it, she would’ve helped. People get speeding tickets, she said, and she woulda helped me pay a lawyer 60 bucks to have the ticket knocked down to a non moving violation and keep all my points on my brand new license. But I lost my privileges for trying to hide it.

When you’re a kid out on the road, your parents already know the kinda shit you’ll get into, the thing that’ll piss them off more than what you’re doing (usually) is when you need their help and won’t ask them because you’re afraid of the consequences, when those consequences (usually) pale in comparison with what happens if you don’t ask for help.
