Thankfully my 14 year old bird who was never out of his cage, ever, before coming to live with me, has never bit me. He gives me kisses & within 3 weeks had picked up my voice and always loves giving kisses & still hates stepping up & being in his cage. From the time I get home, regardless of what time unless it’s dark, his cage is unlocked & he’s interacted with & has become a cherished family member in less than 6 months.

Hello, I just bought a 5 mo old male Parrotlet. My problem is he wants to fly around the room. I pick him up because he doesn’t know step up yet and walk back to the sofa. I can hold him maybe 2 minutes then he is off to another part of the bedroom. So how do I keep him interested in me? I think he will fly if I try the Step up Game.

Very helpful, thank you. It is so difficult to know when you are a first time bird owner what to change and when you are pushing too hard for change and too lenient and creating bad habits. Very clear advice and explanation of why to do it. Thank you!

my fear is that when I get my African grey,my dogs will be outside during the day (I'm leaving them outside now already so they don't feel it's because of the bird being here)but what if I can't get my bird back in the cage when it's time to let my dogs in for the night?

I don't have a bird yet, but someday I would love one! I have seen another video, from a different bird expert saying when you first bring a bird home not to put him in the cage right away. What is your opinion?

I just got my first bird, a hand-fed cockatiel, and I started with leaving the cage open and hanging around. Once it came out, it pretty much just came over and hopped on my knee and up to my hand then climbed up to my shoulder lol. Checked if it would step up onto my hand when I asked and it did, so I just left it on my shoulder

I’ve had my 5 month old Quaker Parrot for 12 days and I’ve been working very hard trying to get him to trust me. He will take treats from my fingers through the bars of his cage, but if I put my hand inside the cage he runs. Just putting my finger through the bars without a treat will get my finger attacked. I have let him out of the cage twice and both times I had to put a towel over him to get him back into the cage. I thought the towel was more traumatic than leaving him in the cage another week or two, while I continued working on the trust issue before letting him out again. Of course I’m questioning that decision now. When he’s out he makes no effort to return to the cage and instead hides in the kitchen or in the living room behind chairs. I didn’t think we were bonding, until here in the past 2 mornings, I noticed he screams if I’m not setting in front of his cage hand feeding his treats to him. As long as I stay out of the cage and make him earn treats that I give him through the bars he stays right at the front of the cage next to me waiting for the chop stick and the next treat. Today, after setting by his cage training for 2 hours with a chop stick and clicker while talking to him the whole time, I put the top of my head against the cage. I was surprised when I felt his beak in my hair. I was even more surprised when he didn’t bite my head. This bird is terrified of hands. The boy at the pet shop told me to hold his tail feathers when he stepped up to prevent him from flying away. Of course being a US Marine, I told his real quick just how screwed up that was. I don’t think the problem is cage aggression, because he makes no effort at all to return to the cage. He will not step up to a perch when offered a treat either.

His cage is 18”x18”x 31” tall. (That was the largest cage they had). He is the only bird in it).
It has a bird ka-bob and 2 other shredding toys in it.
A cuttlebone.
A rope perch,
A wood dowel perch,
A large multi branch natural wood perch.

For breakfast I give him “Fabulous Fruit Mix” about 9:00 am
For dinner I give him “ZuPreem” Pellets (Natural with added vitamins, minerals, amino acids).
He likes the pellets better then the fruit mix.

For treats I give him:
Nutra-Berries
Maillot Spray
Sunflower seeds

I will build a perch stand this week and see if that helps.
But is there anything else I’ve missed?

Love you chica!!! Been watching and following for about 2 years now. I just got a 2 month old green cheeked. He's scared of hands atm. I use the perch method to move him from place to place. Mind you I've only had him 9 days. But any information and knowledge you share I greatly appreciate. Much love. Kiss the flock 🦜 💋

Stay safe, happy and healthy!!!

What if you have dogs and cats and you can only get your bird out when you put the others up until your bird is trained well enough not to fly everywhere’s? I’m scared they will hurt my bird.

You remind me of a younger me with these birds.. You do things as I would have at your age and even now... I really love your videos.. Right now I have a cockatiel and a blue quaker doing really well adjusting as she blue quaker has been here only 6days and came to me strait away...now the cockatiel is much older and we have had her 5 years age is unknown she is not only jealous but only goes to certain people but even though she lets me and my daughter hold her on our shoulders she does not like affection from just anyone so she toys away from them or gets to the point she protects her territory for sure...
