In this case the explosions all at once

What's very interesting in this scene is that the Joker shows how shallow he actually is. He exclaims himself to be an agent of chaos without a plan. As soon as the explosions fail, he fumbles around, trying to implement the rest of his plan, which, according to his own philosophy, shouldn't exist.. No, the sene was not improvised, by the way.

The way the aspect ratio keeps changing because Nolan used different cameras is very distracting once you notice.

Reasons why this was NOT improvised:

It's a Christopher Nolan film, very unlikely that he would allow this type of improvisation with so many risks for actors and crew as well as things just not going exactly like he would want.

Its a one shot sequence of a whole building set to explode. No way you would have something like this improvised in a Hollywood film production with so many factors at play.

Heath (I love him to death in this movie) is clearly following a script or rehearsed way of moving and walking out of the building, as stated by Nolan himself in a director's commentary of the film. One shot sequences need to be rehearsed meticulously so as actors and camera and additional crew move accordingly. Actors dont just walk wherever they want and the cameraman follows. Hell, most high end film cameras only have a on given lens per scene shot and it doesn't just zoom in and out, that takes even more consideration.

Too many factors at play here for it to be considered even remotely improvised. And if it was, there would've been law suits and bunch of other blowback on a production like this. Mind you, Hollywood set accidents still happen to this day, with Alex Baldwins gun going off with a live round being the most recent.

Rob irvine has spent years going to this one video to be the pettiest person on the planet. When people say " i cant belive this is improvised" it is his one purpose on the internet to correct them. I guarantee he is too scared to reply to this comment.

Fun fact: the hospital explosion being delayed was an intentional part of the scene and if you believe that a large scale pyrotechnics stunt like this being improvised is true you're not very smart.

just watched a short that said that the bomb wasnt supposed to be delayed like that and he just stayed in character and improvised and it was so good they decided to keep the scene, pretty dope!! ok well just realized its not like theyd be able to do the scene again because its not like they have another hospital to blow up so not sure they really even had a choice XD

Most people don't realize that when they took this shot it wasn't one hospital they blew up but 4, in 4 separate takes. The last two hospitals had actual people inside that died which is why Heath's performance is so spot on. They ended up using the earlier footage as he acted too surprised for the last take.

To everyone who says 'tHiS wAsN't ImPrOvIzEd' - it absolutely WAS improvised.

They meant to blow up a derelict sport stadium a few blocks away but the special effects guy read the brief wrong and rigged this fully-functioning hospital. Ledger and the film crew just went with it.
