Why Do I Care So Much About Privacy?

Anecdotal evidence is not enough to convince me.

To anyone who says they have "nothing to hide" as an argument for not caring about their privacy: I'd like to request a full, unedited 24-hour recording of your daily life. Including taking care of your basic needs like eating, toilet business, showers, sleeping, entertainment and so on. If you really have nothing to hide then you shouldn't have a problem fulfilling my request. What? You don't want to do it because it's creepy? Are you some sort of a criminal, trying to hide something from me? Or maybe you actually do care about your privacy but pretend that you do not no matter who you are. If you do then please, stop justifying megacrops with their data harvesting madness

This is crazy shit. As in, your video. You have become an extremist due to a few bad incidents. Why the fuck would I care, if the entire world knows that I have autism? I don't give a fuck if google has a photo of my tits, nor do I give a damn that google knows what porn I look at. And to say that other services are just as good or better than google, that is simply delusional. Google is by far the best search engine, and that is a fact. I guess you don't own a phone either, I mean, after all, android or iphone they SPY on you. No kind of extremists are good, whether that be religious, vegans, or privacy like you.

When you have nothing to hide so expose it all, there might come a day when something that is a-ok is suddenly seen as very much not ok with a sizable portion of the population and government. Case in point: queer and trans rights and acceptance

Caring about privacy is just normal. People who go for the more convenient, less privacy-focused stuff (like I usually do, I admit) still care a lot about privacy in the real world. Many of the things we take for granted in the real world exist because we like having privacy, such as having locks on bathroom doors or stalls to change into in many indoor swimming pools. Using the bathroom or getting dressed aren't bad things that you do in secret in fear of someone finding out; they're just completely normal things which we value doing privately. Same generally applies to the internet, and that's why I get annoyed when people find it suspicious that someone cares about privacy.
Think of the internet as a stage, with billions of people constantly watching you. This is very different from how real life works, and some people are simply not comfortable with it.
There's also the fact that you're not in control of your own data. Companies just steal information about you. They're selling you, you are a product, and you get NO money for it, while they get rich from it.

I personally just like to not have to worry about a thing going wrong. I have too much data out there already, don’t need more going out there.

People in the EU have a huge advantage to privacy issues. I went there on a vacation, and ever since coming back to the US my adds have been less targeted. Good. I never listen to adds anyways. But now they really don’t know what to serve me. I keep getting Spanish adds, and I don’t speak Spanish.

One of the biggest reasons to not give your data to big corporations is their ability and willingness to filter and manipulate the information you get. For example search results. Read about Cambridge Analytica scandal for another example.

eh i could still not really care less tbh, dont show my face online and dont have any webcams or security cams or anything they can spy on me through (i fully disable my phone camera, untill i wanna use it). cookies are nice cause if i get ads, id rather they be on something i might actually be interested in than a new deal on diapers or something.

i get your point 100% and i understand, the spying shit is creepy too. but No one really cares about your life lil nigga. the cases you showed are rare occasions, it doesn't happen that frequently + they can still collect your data if they really wanted to, switching browsers & os's won't do much lol. the biggest task an average person would do is sending & receiving large sums of money and they still won't give a shit. there's billionaires out there who get their data collected and still don't have problems.

I am not convinced.
I understand why people would care about their privacy, like the risks of getting accused of crimes you didn't do, but in the end it's just a feeling. People don't wanna be observed.
So, I just don't feel that way. I wouldn't care if google collected literally everything I do on my phone. I would even appreciate it because my crazy behavior and weird philosophical thoughts would make some overworked employees smile.
Those stories of people getting arrested are very rare. They have no chance of happening to me, I'd probably get struck by lightning before that.
I do use Firefox though, not because of its privacy claims, but because it can block ads.

More than privacy, this has kinda convinced me that all activity should be tracked in a public decentralized and auditable database somehow.
In a situation where the tracking is abused, such abuse of the tracking would also be trackable and recorded.

Admittedly, making that actually happen without it being coopted by some government or overpowered corporation seems impossible, so... idk

I feel like you should have talked about how so many apps are required to share data with the chinese government, due to the fact that most apps are owned (like tiktok) or partly owned (like discord) by chinese companies who are REQUIRED to share data with the chinese government. The fact that companies allow chinese companies to do this is simply pure Ѕτսріԁ in my opinion.

I hope these examples people switched to a Linux distro, I use Brave and Libre wolf depending on what I am doing for browsing and Kubuntu for my distro. Never been happier being off the big tech software.

And almost all programs steal your data like brave browser is not as secure as you think google is the biggest Donner for brave. So just saying google is absolutely fine to use. Don’t worry.
