I was jumping around doing Rajini-isms to my cat, while she did her Silk Smitha thang and suddenly I thought I'll rewatch Pandian just for the heck of it. This is one film I haven't seen since it released in 1992. That's a 31 year memory gap for nostalgia to do its cerebral thing. Now that I'm rewatching it, it's actually really good. Like the best of hits of all of Rajini's masala. It is true that at the time, it was completely overshadowed by Kamal Hassan's critically acclaimed Devar Magan, and everyone sorta saw Pandian and just forgot about it. But the nostalgic beats hit hard upon a re-watch. The songs were a common staple in Tamil Nadu back then, from markets to tea shops. It vibed along with Illayaraja's superhit songs of that era. They both rocked the channels like an Orphic mixie.

It would've been considered second-rate for the selective public when compared with Kamal's rural 'nation's pride' Devar Magan. It's commendable how these two competed with each other but kept it gentlemanly, Messi and Ronaldo style, without ever turning it into a publicity debacle for self gain. The box office battles between these two were legendary but they kept it classy by avoiding the pitfalls of celebrity gossip. In the absence of social media, the Kamal - Rajini divide was the most entertaining of chit chats, most people loved both of them equally. Like between Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva, they won't be forced to choose, instead they will take them all, with a heart filled with smiles. There were other actors around doing the same things but the public brushed them aside and said, no! It's Kamal vs Rajini and in the 80's and 90's it was their anticipated showdowns in film quality and box office that made the diwalis and pongals extra special.

The potency of their box-office battles can be traced back to 1983, when the emerging superstar and the proven awards darling released their films on the same day. It became so cherished that on some years' they released two films side by side. In most cases, both would go on to become blockbusters, fending off each other like a great run partner. This trend lasted until 2005, after which their paths had to deviate slightly, with Kamal Hassan's Dasavatharam on the surface and Rajini's Enthiren getting delayed due to vfx work.

In Pandian, the film feels like a premature self congratulatory pat on the back for Rajini, or atleast that's how it would've been perceived back then, especially in close contrasts to the masterful and serious Devar Magan. The film has everything in it, the perfect blend of spice and comedy, maybe almost perfect. But the beats line up swimmingly, it was less absurd than I initially expected.

The story is a simple log line of an upstanding and strict elder sister who is an assistant commissioner of police and Rajini as her younger brother who keeps running afoul of the law. And the script is filled with squabbles of opinionated decisions between who's right and who's wrong, amongst siblings. Rajini with yet another nuanced battle against yet another larger than life female figure. After Mannan, perhaps it was too early to introduce something like this again to the audience, maybe if it was released a few years later it would have had a better reception? Or maybe people were just tired of the local media drumming up the whole Rajini vs Jayalalitha trade offs. This was how it was in 1992 Madras, the oven of the Chennai today that was still baking. I first arrived in Madras from Malaysia in 1992 and experienced a city on edge with violence about to break out at any time. From the Rajiv Gandhi bombing in the south, to the hindu - muslim massacres all around, it was a wild time for a curious kid like me to be moving to India.

But on the side of cinema, the city never slept. The machine cranked no matter what. Alankar theater standees stood the tallest on Mount road, side by side with equally gargantuan standees of other film heroes measuring upto 50 feet with garlands and what not. Jackie Chan, Arnold Schwarzenegger stood inches away from Rajini, Kamal, Vijayakanth, Prabhu etc. The people that bustled around them looked like ants shuffling around their daily errands. Films were the windows in which the people used either to shut the world off, or to open new worlds to them. Pandian was one such run of the mill film, doing what it was supposed to do.

The film had prime Kushbu, who you'll fall in love with no matter what your type is. Peak Rajini, doing peak Rajini stuff, even prophecising. Like when he said Kuthu is the dance of the future, did he know that a kuthu song like Naatu Naatu would one day win an Oscar or King SR Khan himself would commission a kuthu song, composed and presented with the boldest of southern strokes with a completely southern cast and crew in his next film Jawan? Rajini knew things we didn't know, didn't he? He knew stuff ...his trips to the Himalayas is because of his counsel and company with the mythical Hanuman ji isn't it? lol. It shows...every comedy act Rajini has done on screen is a Hanuman inspired shenanigan. Haha...just kidding people, but I felt I needed to let that little chuckle out. Am sure Hanuman ji wouldn't mind... wink (we all speak to our gods in our own unique way, my god is the arts...katam katam).

So how does Rajini respond to Devar Magan? Months later he comes out with his version of a fresh rural film and a couple of years later he releases his gangster magnum opus, Baasha. And the rest would be a highway of escalating budgets, ambitious concepts, new discoveries and grand celebrations. Even if 'Jailer' fails, I'm not least concerned because I am feeling the efforts and care the Rajini estate is taking to complete the Rajinikanth repertoire before he gets too old to essay the leading man position, is utmost and prescient. They have a checklist of subjects and communities they want to address and they have a list of talented new-age directors they are excited to work with. Instead of an actor moulding himself to fit a certain role, when Rajini's star blazed too bright, he had to make the whole industry and scripts revolve around him. And that script template is so set, that anyone can copy it and become a famous star. Rajini's team has, since Kabali, shifted their approach, where instead of seasoned directors crafting the next Rajini escapade, it's come down to ardent fans who grew up cherishing his films to do their part in showcasing what side of Rajini they hold sacred. Even when the project is perceived as a failure, after the usual media / industry toxicity has left the building, the work Rajini leaves behind starts a new life on its own, with the little voices who were grateful the film was even made and released.

The outpouring of love and support of this magnitude and earnestness will never be experienced again, for whatever comes after this will merely be a shadow and a blessing from the lord of them all, Rajinikanth the superstar for the ages.

The worldwide hysteria, that began with a small section of Tamillians around the world, spread to other cultures that now includes a sizable population of Japan and is slowly spreading elsewhere. In every yugam, there was a dusky hero who came from another land and became the hero the people needed at the time, to progress them to the next stage, relieving them from whatever abject misery they were under. It was Rama in one yugam, Krishna in another, in ours ... Simply for metaphor's sake, the neelakanthan Rajinikanth's rise to stardom from a lowly bus conductor job, is perhaps similar to that. His conquest was for the dignity and harmony of the undermined public, and his great war was waged within illusory parameters. He is the living proponent of Joseph Campbell's hero archetype. Rajini even reads one of his books openly in Lingaa.

More than just business and status, it was his values that he's leaving behind that's resonating more. More than technical and artistic merits, it's the philosophy of the self that he's invoking that's changing the Tamil paradigm today. In that regard, and in addition to the fanaticisms he receives, Rajini is comparable to the spirit of a god of sorts (an avatar) that brought about a moralistic epoch in the psychological realm for a diaspora dealing with too much internal strife. And by heeding his example, albeit onscreen or real-life, has assured them that the treasures of the Tamil identity, values and progress will always be upheld and sanctified, with logic, humility and ambition.

The intellectuals can now breathe easy, because it's ok to celebrate and have fun. Life was always a shaky bridge no one was ready to cross anyway, but with the beauty and divinity of the artisty bestowed upon us, gently guiding our hand, blind with hope and prayers, we are crossing it with gusto. The next generation will look back at these late Rajini films and be wowed at the reverence it showered on their idol and be inspired by it, lending their part in a long line of artistic contributions.

And today, since we grew up side by side with this legend doing his thing, we feel like we belong and are part of one big family, and this party is just starting, we better enjoy it to the fullest while it lasts. Ithu eppadi irukku.....petta parakk!! ✨
