I have a Subaru with the 2.5 boxer in it, and I was wondering how oil is kept from sloshing in to the cylinders when cornering hard or generally exposing the car to strong forces sideways, since the cylinders are laying flat quite close to the crank. Is there some design in the crank case to mitigate this?

Another thing I’ve been thinking of is how come the cylinders are so resistant to being honed out oval by repeated friction biased towards the lower cylinder wall due to gravity (mainly cold starts)?

imagine how much more popular subaru would be if they used actual gears and FWD options

Jason, does putting unequal length headers on a naturally aspirated boxer 4 engine affect the scavenging or cause any unwanted side effects?

I have a 2023 honda with a 6cyl flat boxer engine. came like that from stock. Its not just porshe and subaru.

This is a good video that demonstrates how this is both a flat plane crank and too a boxer engine with crank-pin journals offset at 180 degrees for the first and second pairs of pistons. Not all flat engines are boxers as that is determined by the first and second pairs of pistons sharing a common crank-pin journal(s).

Neither of these engines came in a 2.0L. The 22R-E is a 2.4L and the EJ20 is a 2.5L dual cam Subaru.

Boxer engines are cool. I have always admired subaru for being different and not giving up on their design. Many companies tried boxer engines and they didn’t do too hot. For Subaru to stick with the boxer for this long and make everything all wheel drive no matter what. Is pretty cool.

Hello, I love your 3D model of your boxer engine. Is it possible to get data for a 3D printer of this engine I would love to give it to my students as a project and use it during classes.

Boxer engines have inherent flaws, too; they are notorious for oil leaks, head gasket failures & oblong cylinder wear- due to the forces of gravity acting on the pistons...

I've seen where people are making UEL headers for civics, so now you can have rumble on I4's too

I’ve seen people on forums insisting the boxer engine has a similar CofG to an I4, despite this being counter-intuitive. You did mention in the video that the boxer’s CofG is lower, which is logical. Do this always apply, like for like?

It’s interesting that the Subaru engine has multiple cam shafts because airplane boxer engines just have one cam shaft with long push rods

I was once a subaru guy. Not because of their speed but because their AWD is the best there is when it comes to wintery roads, and here in Vermont that is important. I am not a fan of their engines though. Every subaru I have ever owned needs new head gaskets at about 100,000 miles. And to replace them properly means that the engine needs to be pulled out. This is very expensive and does not feel worth it.

Ya but, any I 4 > 2.0L = less efficient, more vibration, and typically has something to do with the engineers not being able to figure out how to make the engine work at the 0.5L/cylinder most-efficient size. I6 is probably the best engine, with the BMW I6 being one of the best.

ive heard anecdotal info from people saying that boxer engines tend to blow gaskets and rings more commonly, if im remembering correctly. it made sense to me since gravity keeps the majority of the oil on the bottom half of the pistons rather than equally spread on an I-4

Why do 4 cylinder Boxer engines sound like 2 cylinder engines? The same goes for the Ferrari 308.... That 8 cylinder Boxer sounds like a 4 cylinder.

My mom owns a Subaru wrx 2016 manual awd yes it has a turbo pushing 270hp, I myself own a Mitsubishi Lancer limited GTS 2017 manual pushing 190hp at most fwd manual right under the evo model, 220hp about after adding my obd2 tuning chip but one day I’ve raced a Subaru brz which is a none turbo NA flat 4 and the brz whooped my ass… I’ve also raced a wrx which is a flat 4 turbo and ofc it smoked my ass, No matter what y’all say with my experience flat 4 engines are faster and has more torque then my inline 4 engine stock or not, so that’s why they are also double the price even used 🤣 but my car is for sure a bit more reliable though that’s the good side just slower and less torque

Well I did not know this before but it is one one hand logical because the normal force of each cylinder in the boxer in not related to the ortogonal direction of the pistons while firing.
This is also logical under the consideration of vector-force-calculation by the cross-product.
But this would yield in occurring other order vibrations depending on the learning angle.
