I have a Subaru with the 2.5 boxer in it, and I was wondering how oil is kept from sloshing in to the cylinders when cornering hard or generally exposing the car to strong forces sideways, since the cylinders are laying flat quite close to the crank. Is there some design in the crank case to mitigate this?
Another thing I’ve been thinking of is how come the cylinders are so resistant to being honed out oval by repeated friction biased towards the lower cylinder wall due to gravity (mainly cold starts)?
imagine how much more popular subaru would be if they used actual gears and FWD options
ОтветитьJason, does putting unequal length headers on a naturally aspirated boxer 4 engine affect the scavenging or cause any unwanted side effects?
ОтветитьI have a 2023 honda with a 6cyl flat boxer engine. came like that from stock. Its not just porshe and subaru.
ОтветитьThis is a good video that demonstrates how this is both a flat plane crank and too a boxer engine with crank-pin journals offset at 180 degrees for the first and second pairs of pistons. Not all flat engines are boxers as that is determined by the first and second pairs of pistons sharing a common crank-pin journal(s).
ОтветитьNeither of these engines came in a 2.0L. The 22R-E is a 2.4L and the EJ20 is a 2.5L dual cam Subaru.
ОтветитьBoxer engines are cool. I have always admired subaru for being different and not giving up on their design. Many companies tried boxer engines and they didn’t do too hot. For Subaru to stick with the boxer for this long and make everything all wheel drive no matter what. Is pretty cool.
ОтветитьI dont care what ever engine for me as long as it is a japanese engine is in the hood its already go😂
ОтветитьActually even the sound of the boxer exhaust that said " unequal headers" almost all people prefer that sound hehe
ОтветитьIt’s Boxster, not Boxer.
ОтветитьHello, I love your 3D model of your boxer engine. Is it possible to get data for a 3D printer of this engine I would love to give it to my students as a project and use it during classes.
ОтветитьNice video of going up Bogus Basin Road here in Boise.
ОтветитьBoxer engines have inherent flaws, too; they are notorious for oil leaks, head gasket failures & oblong cylinder wear- due to the forces of gravity acting on the pistons...
ОтветитьDo the boxed engines really have more head gasket problems?
ОтветитьI've seen where people are making UEL headers for civics, so now you can have rumble on I4's too
ОтветитьI’ve seen people on forums insisting the boxer engine has a similar CofG to an I4, despite this being counter-intuitive. You did mention in the video that the boxer’s CofG is lower, which is logical. Do this always apply, like for like?
ОтветитьIt’s interesting that the Subaru engine has multiple cam shafts because airplane boxer engines just have one cam shaft with long push rods
ОтветитьThe boxer engine set up greatly helps in wet and slippery off roading conditions.
ОтветитьOMG the engines from Mercedes Benz
ОтветитьI was once a subaru guy. Not because of their speed but because their AWD is the best there is when it comes to wintery roads, and here in Vermont that is important. I am not a fan of their engines though. Every subaru I have ever owned needs new head gaskets at about 100,000 miles. And to replace them properly means that the engine needs to be pulled out. This is very expensive and does not feel worth it.
ОтветитьHow much higher does one of those models cost?
ОтветитьI have a 2016 Subaru STI with 99K miles, so I have to change the correct timing belt. My question is that I should replace part of the timing belt. Thank you
ОтветитьYa but, any I 4 > 2.0L = less efficient, more vibration, and typically has something to do with the engineers not being able to figure out how to make the engine work at the 0.5L/cylinder most-efficient size. I6 is probably the best engine, with the BMW I6 being one of the best.
Ответитьfule consumption at equal power plz ???.........may be with an example.........
ОтветитьCan't you sit the Boxer Engine, Not in the Front , But in the {Mid-(to)-Back}-[Sorry I'd Don't know The Right Term] or on the {roof,(Sorry)}
ОтветитьSubaru moving away from unequal length headers?? Which models, I have 2, 2020 2.4 turbo and my new 2022 BRZ 2.4 ? Do Either of these get the new header design?? Thanks for these great informative videos!!
ОтветитьMy Mk1 fiesta has the sequence of 1-2-4-3 which i find weird
ОтветитьGreat video, I'm a new Subie owner and not mechanically inclined, this helped a lot.
ОтветитьAnd why you going to compare single overhead cam vs dual overhead cams
Ответитьive heard anecdotal info from people saying that boxer engines tend to blow gaskets and rings more commonly, if im remembering correctly. it made sense to me since gravity keeps the majority of the oil on the bottom half of the pistons rather than equally spread on an I-4
ОтветитьBruh
ОтветитьWhy do 4 cylinder Boxer engines sound like 2 cylinder engines? The same goes for the Ferrari 308.... That 8 cylinder Boxer sounds like a 4 cylinder.
ОтветитьI love Subaru.
ОтветитьCool demonstration, and the fact that these models are 3D printed is impressive.
ОтветитьMy mom owns a Subaru wrx 2016 manual awd yes it has a turbo pushing 270hp, I myself own a Mitsubishi Lancer limited GTS 2017 manual pushing 190hp at most fwd manual right under the evo model, 220hp about after adding my obd2 tuning chip but one day I’ve raced a Subaru brz which is a none turbo NA flat 4 and the brz whooped my ass… I’ve also raced a wrx which is a flat 4 turbo and ofc it smoked my ass, No matter what y’all say with my experience flat 4 engines are faster and has more torque then my inline 4 engine stock or not, so that’s why they are also double the price even used 🤣 but my car is for sure a bit more reliable though that’s the good side just slower and less torque
ОтветитьI’ve driven that road many times!
ОтветитьWell I did not know this before but it is one one hand logical because the normal force of each cylinder in the boxer in not related to the ortogonal direction of the pistons while firing.
This is also logical under the consideration of vector-force-calculation by the cross-product.
But this would yield in occurring other order vibrations depending on the learning angle.
You know you're a Subaru fan boy when you're trying to give the boxer motor a one up for safety during a collision
ОтветитьInline sounds better at redline
ОтветитьAwesome, thanks for explanation.
ОтветитьAircraft engines also have opposing cylinders, but come in 4 and 6 cylinders. With much, much larger internal volumes.
ОтветитьThere’s no way you’ll convince me buying that piece of garbage Subaru, however Porsche are lil more define I would say,Toyota will beat them all
ОтветитьWhat about the subaru V4
ОтветитьI have a red boxster!!!! Super car status I take it to meets all the time and laugh at the hatchbacks
ОтветитьWe forgot the other advantage in line 4 cylinders have they don't time to blow head gaskets as much as Boxer motors
ОтветитьI really want to build a flat 12
ОтветитьThose mountains look like Boise. Are you from Boise?
ОтветитьNice models. Great video
ОтветитьHuh... Wasn't familiar with boxer engines, I thought there was just inline and V.
Totally gonna print those models!!!!
