I always explain it by telling people that the IP gets you to the machine then the port gets you to that individual application on that machine. I work on IBM mainframes so we have hundreds of applications on one machine which requires hundreds of ports on one machine.

So if u get this right, every port has its own task. Like you said 1001 till 1005 is used for the website for example. So how do i know what port are used by my Xbox for example? I want to open the ports, and i have to add new "command" in the list if you know what i mean..so is there a way to check this?

Can you expand on remote ports vs local? Say I want an inbound rule for windows defender to accept all connections addressed with port 1234... should that be the local port or remote?

Just my 2 cents. This is only half explanation about the used ports. On both sides, local ports are getting assigned when the connection is being established. IP+Port = Socket. Two sockets are used for TCP communication. The server's listening port (80 in your example) is only used for establishing a connection by the client. After that the pair ServerIP:ServerLocalPort and ClientIP:ClientLocalPort are participating in the communication. These local ports are randomly assigned. This, I believe, needs to be explained in this video as well.

What I'm curious about are ports say between two site to site VPN connections. My guess is they would be listening on the one port only at both ends to keep the tunnel for eg. Openvpn using 1184 only on both sides? so I'm assuming here that no Ephemeral ports are used at all? does anyone know for sure? thanks
