An analog square wave? The sewing needle of eternity weaving its web through all directions at all times in all of space.

I earned a BS in physics in 1960. When I first heard of lasers, I thought, "So what?" I am ashamed to admit it.
A Musician would understand and appreciate the harmonics of light.

Funny like Mike said at the end, the universities are simultaneously promoting and denouncing the same tables as good research and bad research.

With a Fourier series you cannot make make any frequency higher than the highest frequency in the series. So that claim is false. So he has not explained how this works.

We only have to wait until we collectively turn 31,536,000,000 years old to have the number of seconds equal the number of attoseconds in a second!
By that point, the sun will have devoured Mercury, Venus, and the Earth about 10 billion years prior during its hungry red giant phase, and will have become a carbon-oxygen white dwarf soon after.
If the universes model of dark energy has w = -1.5, we’ll have a couple billion years more before the Universe rips itself apart at an atomic level, all non zero distances becoming infinitely large, cosmic strings disintegrate and the very fabric of space and time unravels.

Unfortunately, it’s looking more and more like the true value of w is less than -1, so no cataclysmic disintegration for us.

Only a long, dark, cold and lonely slide into oblivion as one by one, the lights in the universe go out as space expands infinitely, and we lose sight of everything except the local group we call home.
So hold onto the attoseconds while you can!

You never know when you’ll blink, look up, and that dream of becoming old enough to have your attoseconds equal seconds in your age has come true, but everything changed when you weren’t looking and you can’t even reach the other stars because they’ve gone beyond your cosmic horizon.

Lots of scientists got Nobel prize related to lasers. A laser light is a Bose-Einstein condensate of photons which follow Bose-Einstein statistics. Professor Satyen Bose was not awarded a Nobel prize. I think it was because he was a dark skinned Indian living in pre-independent India.

I'll bet the first pico-second laser experiments were giant finicky monstrosities that were completely unsuitable for "real" lab work. Now he has a little box on his table that generates them with relative ease. This, I figure, will happen with Attosecond lasers fairly quickly. Just my hunch...

Time is the number of curves in space. If you increase the number of curves you get atto. Frequency is recurrency of curves. There are more irrational numbers between 10 and 20 than between 1 and 2. Irrationals are highest between power 8 and 16. Beyond power 16 they reduce and almost same. That's why red shift.

Small corrections: First, the characteristic wavelength of the incoming primary light 10E-6 m, not 10E-15.

Second, "ordinary" femto second lasers also use the overlapping wave principle, so this is nothing new. However, they cannot reach these extremely short pulse lengths, because there are no laser media available to cover the necessary frequency spectrum. For instance, titanium sapphire crystals "lase" from about 700 nm to 1000 nm, so if you build a femto second laser with that, you have these 300 nm range to play with - which is quite a lot, but not enough to go to 10E-18.

I gotta agree, this seems pretty early in a field to award the prize. Calculating an amount of time by summing observed wave forms just feels a bit far off for me 😮 Its not as if they are generating attosecond pulses, which is what you would need for scientific application. As the prize was intentionally not awarded to theoretical physicists, it seems odd

Ok maybe this is a dumb question but if you can exactly pin point the location of an electron and then exactly pinpoint its location a fraction of an attosecond later, couldn’t you calculate its velocity with that information? Would a sub-attosecond frame rate then violate the uncertainty principle?
