These Westerns didn't just get snubbed — they got robbed. Number 5 features two Hollywood legends going head-to-head in a performance that still defines their careers, while number 7 had Clint Eastwood at his grittiest — and STILL didn't get an Oscar nod. How did these masterpieces miss out?

Why does Hollywood keep snubbing these Masterpieces? I blame Mel Brooks.

The Wild Bunch is a classic with William Holden, Robert Ryan, Ernest Borgnine, and a cast of thousands. 😂

Once upon a time in the west was criminally overlooked by the academy.

Perhaps there were just too many Westerns and Hollywood just got jaded? The public ccrtainly eventually did. They saturated TV, serials and B Movies in the middle decades of the last century, quite apart from these higher-end Hollywood products. As a kid in about 1964 I saw exactly the same story line and some of the same pieces of film from a movie about Confederates refusing to surrender after the US Civil War in two TV shows (probably Laramie and Cheyenne). All three were shown within weeks of each other on TV. The subject was often repetitive, samey and very culturally specific to part of the USA.

From 1927 to 1967 I agreed with the Academy's choice for best picture ONCE. Add She Wore a Yellow Ribbon and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence to your list ..And Anthony Mann made some terrific westerns too.

You could do as episode on Oscar winning westerns. High Noon, Unforgiven, No Country for Old Men, Dances With Wolves, etc.

I just saw The Wild Bunch again after 30 years. Let me offer up the following: The first section, culminating with their discovery that they stole washers instead of silver money, is great! However, after that the film is rather so-so. Discuss.

Excellent westerns are also Tall in the Saddle, 1944, with John Wayne and Ella Raines; Westward the Women, 1951, with Robert Taylor; Will Penny, 1968, with Charlton Heston and Joan Hackett; No Name on the Bullet, 1959, with Audie Murphy.

Why? I'll tell you why, most of them were made our starred conservatives. Argue with me libtards.

When Mattie Ross crosses the river to catch up with Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. That's no stunt double. Hailee Steinfeld swam with her horse across that river. True Grit indeed.
