To live each day as if it were our last day on earth is what it means to be fully alive. Unfortunately this is a very difficult objective to attain, especially in the context of contemporary society which has sterilized the world of all mystery and awe. I believe the only way to be fully alive and live each day as if it were our last is through pursuing the highest and most distant ideals, ideals which urge us forward on an ascending plane.

This is an awesome read! This section says so much about the student-disciple relationship too, in spirituality or otherwise. The teacher KNOWS the wonderful potential that the student doesn't know they are capable of, so although it seems ruthless, they're actually helping the student by discouraging weaknesses.

I read these books in HS back in the late 90's. I've never researched them though. Was Don Juan a real person or a literary device?

Dwelling on death by focusing on how short time is, is a waste of time. Death doesn't exist while you're alive. Death and life are two different universes. Death simply doesnt matter while you're alive and death, with it's subsequent short time model, is irrelevant. Awareness of having a short time comes from creation, work. Not death. What do you want to build? Can you get it accomplished? That is the only read ok nsble awareness of having a short time.
However, if you're a hunter, live by the sword, die by the sword. A hunters only sense of time is his stomach, and by necessity, death does wait at the accomplishment of every mission, for somebody

Yeah, I read all these books too, and you know what I think? Now that I've read more widely and deeply into various mystical traditions and practices, it seems pretty clear that Don Juan is a rhetorical device that Castaneda uses to disclose a philosophical system which is clearly not of Toltec origins. In fact, its all Kabbalistic mysticism combined with an ecclectic hodge-podge of monastic ascetical practice and the philosophical speculations of Spinoza, Kant, Hegel and Nietzsche. In other words, Castaneda is an original storyteller, but his story isn't original or even factual. But that's okay because its 'coyote wisdom' or some such bullshit to New Age seekers. The dude was probably funded by the CIA. You think you have time, but I think you have Chaim.

Someone ignorantly commented that don Juan only sounded wise, and then went into a rant about money and business. You should all know, don Juan was very wealthy. it was a 408 year old lineage of sorcerers, each passing down what they had accumulated. Don Juan and group owned 4 homes in Mexico, one of which we've tracked down in north west Mexico, but there was one near Mexico city also. He owned enough stock to go to share holder meetings as an important person, and their collection of art was fabulous. I know a witch who was part of helping restore and sell the art collection in Hollywood when don Juan left. Where some of their vast fortune was given to the witch Soledad, to influence movies in Hollywood. Star Wars was one of those results, and the magic of the Jedi is OUR magic. Anything you see in there, you can actually do with some hard work to learn how. Close to 40 have learned to do various stages of it, all of which is more than any other "magic" system out there. So maybe, keep your skepticism to yourself, until you look into it more? You'll get egg on your face if I see your comment.

Your soul drops you in this sh*thole because it thinks it's fun. Then, because it is a sh*thole you become suicidal. Then to escape the desire to not live, you search for wisdom and meaning. If you follow the prescribed path...you become like Don Juan. Blissful, and enabling the human setup - to force you to act and become something you might not want.

The other option is to argue with reality. Now, this may sound stupid and foolish at first. But how else are you going to have the inclination to question the soul and this universe? Are you happy, as a human, to simply enable this sick incarnational game to go on? You think the ammount of human despair, trauma and suffering is justifiable?

I dream of a day where we allow ourselves to question the "will of god". Which I don't believe is the will of a god........but simply the inertia of the universe. Human suffering is an abomination, yet I have no doubt it's designed and forced onto us as a "catalyst" for change. By our souls. But the numbers can't be negotiated with - very few humans actually get to a good place. And then they are recycled into a new body...their memory wiped clean.

Which is why you should never admire Don Juans. They are the humans that think they are playing the game as it was intended to. All the while enabling human suffering. He's right about one thing though - if there is something you don't like about the human predicament - CHANGE it! If that means changing "god's will" or the soul's will.........let's do it.

Castaneda....disgusting con artist......which is not surprising. It is surprising, however how millions fell for this con job.

"Your problem is that you think you have time" is an old Zen saying from the classic 12th century zen fable collections. Castaneda ripped off a lot of the zen teachings in his stories.

Good books that were an integral part of the scene in the seventies. After this book the rest where more or less madeup...all the gurus eventually succumb to power and delusions..

but I thought Carlos turned to be merely a talented novelist who made up the whole thing and eventually just couldn't keep it going? which explained a reader's growing incomprehension and confusion as the series reached the end and it got more and more sort of 'garbled'. So what's going on now? They've made movies and everyone's talking about them? Or there's been a return of Carlos and it turns out he is really purporting to be some kind of mystic guru with 'powers'? Or what?
I felt kinda cheated at the end, back then. Since then I have learned about NDE and see it as the simple 'answer to everything' and the 'mystical truth' of everything and it seems clear to me now that any 'in depth', 'behind the curtain' metaphysical work that doesn't put the 'answer' as clearly as the NDE things do is fraudulent.
Which doesn't mean I don't like a good yarn.
Just I like to distinguish good yarns from fact. :)

If the velocity of money is stable and you can asume it constant and the GDP as well, what does that tell you about the Money Supply? Ehhh? Speak up Don Juan, don’t be afraid l the Money Supply. You have to change. I can’t hear you now! Are you just going to looked puzzled like you didn’t know who Alan Greenspan was? (You can also use a cooking recipe for this exercise nd any number of other things, just speak with authority about whatever none-sense you say).

This man Carlos is really crafty, very clever. Rarely it happens, such cleverness - because it is very easy to create scientific fiction, not much imagination is needed, but to create spiritual fiction is very very difficult; one needs a great artistic and imaginary mind. Because things you don't know, how can you even imagine them? That's why I say one per cent of truth is there. On that one per cent of truth he has been able to create a big edifice. On that one per cent of truth he has been able to project much imagination. On that one iota of truth he has made the whole house, a beautiful palace - a fairy tale. But that one per cent of truth is there, otherwise it would have been impossible.

So one per cent of Don Juan must be there somewhere or other. He must have met somebody; maybe his name was Don Juan, maybe not, that is not material, that doesn't matter. Carlos has come across a being superior to himself, he has come across a being who knows some secrets.

Maybe he has not realized them, maybe he has stolen them, maybe he has just borrowed them from someone else. But he has met somebody who has somehow got some facts of spiritual life and this man has been able to create imagination around it. And the imagination becomes possible if you use drugs as a help - very easy, because drugs are nothing but an aid to imagination.

This man has come across some being who knows something, and then through drugs, he has projected that small truth into imaginary worlds. Then his whole fiction is created. It is a drug trip, but a good experiment in itself. And when I say all these things I am not condemning Carlos. In fact I have come to love the man. It is a rare flight of imagination, and if it is a hundred per cent fiction then Carlos himself is a rare being. If he has not come across anybody at all then he must have that one per cent of reality in himself. Because otherwise it is impossible - you can only build a house on a foundation, even an imaginary house needs at least a foundation in reality. You can make a house of cards but at least the ground, the solid ground is needed. That much is true.

So read, because you will have to read. Every age has its own fictions, romances; one has to pass through them. You will have to read. You cannot escape Carlos Castaneda. But remember that only one per cent is true - and you have to find it."

This was reality fiction then and is sheer fiction and artifice now.
