MINI Cooper S 2021 review - better than a VW Polo GTI?

What do you guys think - does the new MINI look better than ever?! Or would you choose another small hatch instead?

Can't help but point out the obvious, which is that the car in this video is NOT the cooper S, it is the JCW. So, when you went through the engine specs and said 'this car has the 2.0l turbo at 178 bhp' it actually has 228bhp.
I have a 2011 convertible JCW which has 208 bhp from a 1.6 turbo, which is why I was interested to compare the difference of the 10 years between them and the different engine size.

Why does the modern Mini Cooper with its new 3 cyl turbo engine deliver such poor fuel economy compared to the latest Kia GT Line turbo 3cyl Picanto?

It's something that Mini simply haven't got right.

Mini should have developed a 1litre 3cyl turbo engine with Mild Hybrid for their Mini Saloon range.

I had a Suzuki Swift 1litre 3cyl turbo with Mild Hybrid before I switched to a Mini Cooper this year.
The Swift returned phenomenal fuel consumption figures - I regularly got 55/58 mpg & last year on holiday, I was registering 66mpg.

My new Mini Cooper struggles to get above 48 mpg even with careful driving.

Suzuki can teach Mini a thing or two about engine technology, thats for sure.

The EU spec of this car has less power, yet has a faster acceleration time. Very interesting.
In my country we get the full power version. Wonder what the acceleration will be like.

Looking at this and other posts ii don't think Mat likes BMW products of any kind, thats fine, but when reviewing he should be neutral.

On our 3rd 5 door hatchback now since they were launched in 2014. Both previous models were great, but the CooperS Auto Premium Plus pack is even better. But I guess haters will hate.

I test drove one tonight and it immediately made me want one so fun to drive surprised me really wasnt expecting...that handling he talk about is real facts it does get scary lol but if you have experience speeding youll be fine

I've got one is these, had it for a year and that dodgy pull under breaking gets worse and worse as time goes on.. Ablsoute terrible car for the price and looks... Shame because the older minis where top... Going down hill now more and more of the car is built in china...

The Mini Cooper jcp is more like the gti. The s is a bit slower.

What great car it maybe but that arm rest is in a dangerous position to lift up the hand brakes

Changes aside, still a sharp and sturdy little car. Makes many other cars feel like pot metal. (Yes., I mean you Toyota , Honda, Hyundai and Kia.) Is it practical as a family car- certainly not! Not by today's standards and bear in mind that when the original came into being the average height of an Englishman was 5'7". People are both taller and most definitely larger these days.

Volkswagen is the biggest car manufacturer in the world, so also a lot of money for marketing. First of all the quality of the interior inside a Mini is so much better then the crappy interiors Volkswagen offers (looks nice on the picture but when you are on the inside….) Just watch the dragraces which shows that the Mini is really quick in its class. In the Netherlands there isn’t much in the price range of the mini these days that looks and drives so nice. Like a Toyota corolla gr is really expensive here. A Yaris gr is also way overpriced here. A Ford fiesta st that probably drives even better doesn’t come with an automatic gearbox (it’s a hothatch I get it, but some people drive thousands of kilometers……) and the interior isn’t on the same level by far. Then Volkswagens…. I have driven polo’s and don’t drive nearly as goods as a Mini. Really steering with no steering at all (yes that has to come in a hothatch) a GTI also looks really basic… so yes go for a Volkswagen Golf r. The only standing apart Volkswagen hothatch. Also Mat is sponsored by Volkswagen. And all the other cars he compares it to are so dull So there you go. O yes I’m a Porsche and Volvo and maybe Mini as well these days. Now let the fight begin but that’s just my observation. Believe me Mini’s drive much better then Mat makes you believe. The only thing that is better is a Ford fiesta st in its class.

That engine noise seems addictive not irritating!

My gripes are with these videos is always Matt saying click on the Pop-Up banner or follow the link in the description below don't want to do that 1 min into a 13- 15 minute review.
And it happens multiple times! can you please just do it at the end.

Your review is so whiny. I love my Mini. Sure it may not be for everyone, but we don't buy them for their practicality. It's the connection to the road, they're cut throat driving machines that are non apologetic and maneuverable.

Hate the look of the new minis it just doesn't look right with another set of rear windows.

What a terrible looking interior on top of an already okay exterior

I have a 2019 mini Cooper Sport 1.5 turbo, the only problem i find is the clutch is very stiff...but perhaps the previous owner may have done some adjustments...?

I am sure I am one of threw that think mini are too bloated now, not really “mini” anymore besides the original and two door hatch. The countryman all trac is the size of a Honda CRV, but much more expensive, and I read are not nearing as reliable. With that said, I still love them for being quirky and different.

The modern coopers have a weight distribution of 70/30, so when he was braking hard yes it's gonna be squirrelly 😂

16 inch wheels look ok, everyone should have them for comfort and MPG

Shame you haven't been given the Mini Countryman Cooper S as all the vents work and down to the cup holders they are large enough! I have the duel automatic and am new to automatics and growing very fond of it

The rear indicator the arrows are misleading it’s a defect in my calculated evaluation the left back light arrow is like this >and the right side is like < all wrong should be switch around.

The center console could be a bit bigger for being separated of your passenger

Can you review the r53 mini? Or compare the old to the new?

I love the new BMW mini’s, most satisfying of all for me are the new circular day time lights which turn in to the direction indicator. I think they are very satisfying

It’s quite fun to drive. Visibility and cabin design functionality are awful though. The standard brakes BMW are putting on cars these days is an absolute joke considering the power they have

all these "cons" that are listed aren't bad. I'm 6'3 and own the manual f56 3-door. these cars are absolutely amazing to drive and experience, you just need to know what you're getting yourself into
