The first thermonuclear device tested in late 1952 by the U.S. was not, and I must repeat, WAS NOT an H-bomb, or a bomb at all. I wish that people who know best would stop calling it that.

Correctly, it could be labelled as an underground mine such as those employed by the allies in the Somme in the first world war.
Something which weighs tens of thousands of tones and needs thousands of horsepower just to keep itself cool is not a bomb.

On that basis, the Soviets were first to test an hydrogen bomb with their layer cake design.
Contrary to what some historians conveniently prefer to believe, the layer cake design, despite its yield limitations, was indeed a true H-bomb

OK, you guys are ONLY several years behind. Many know of Windscale. There are 3 other docs made long before you released this. Not exactly the greatest choice of words for a title.

The ironic fact is the soviets beat England because they had better access to US nuclear secrets than England did.

🤦 You need weapons grade petoneum which is extensively concentrated. Then you need precision high grade explosives to compress The weapons grade petronium.....

The most rudimentary nuclear weapons used a high grade plutonium with a high grade projectile fired at a high rate of speed to start fission ......

A Nuclear power plants Will never explode like a nuclear bomb. The explosions that you see from past nuclear power plant accidents were steam explosions and or hydrogen which ripped apart the facility opening the reactor core to the external environment.

If you limit the ability for steam to build pressure in the reactor containment area the reactor core will simply melt down through the concrete which releases tremendous amounts of energy So either the rods will disperse enough energy before they melt through the thick concrete containment layer of the reactor or they will penetrate the concrete polluting the ground around the facility.

I think it is interesting how opinions have changed a couple of times over the necessity of building their own nuclear bomb. The post ww2/cold War pro-nuclear bomb sentiments vs the post USSR collapse anti-nuclear sentiment vs the NEW threat of Putin/Russian aggression in eastern Europe renewing nuclear deterrence/new armaments race.

Thanks to Klaus Fuchs, the spy brought by the British who passed the atomic bomb project to the Soviets, they managed to make nuclear weapons, the communists were always copycats and donkeys, and were busy killing people in the Gulags, Hodomor, Stalin's Purges, etc.

IIRC Kyshtym accident in USSR preceded Windscale by one month. So second world scale nuclear accident, not first. Tom Tuohy, a legend, a hero. Mankind was at a great loss with that generation passing away.

Japan did NOT immediately surrender after Nagasaki got nuked!!! Nagasaki got vaporized on the 9th of August, 1945 and Japan formally surrendered on September 2nd, 1945. It took them THREE AND A HALF WEEKS to formally surrender!

With the invention of the atomic bomb mankind now has power to cause his own extinction. It is a double edged sword. It would have been better if humans had never learned about nuclear fission.

As heartbreaking as what the Japanese citizens suffered, I have to say.
The United States was NOT in the war.

Japan dropped over a 1000 bombs on Pearl Harbor thinking they would cripple the US.

America dropped 2.

JAPAN SURRENDERED.

Whats wrong with these people in the comments....Of course they thought there could be an explosion after seeing 2 bombs explode!

This was extremely early in development of nuclear power so why wouldn't they consider an explosion a very real possibility In the event of a meltdown!

Japan didn't "immediately surrender" after Nagasaki. They did not surrender for five more days, and the Emperor's speech was nearly stolen by a group of diehard fanatics who wanted to have him broadcast a fight-to-the-death message.

This nuclear accident has nothing to do with the Chernobyl disaster.

You wouldn't compare a car collision on the motorway to the disaster of Tenerife.
So why would you compare ANYTHING to Chernobyl which was, by a huge margin, much worse than any other nuclear accident in history?

This is just a dishonest narrative used to spread fear and hate towards nuclear energy.
Shame on you.

Ignore all that was said here, and try keep in mind that nuclear energy is clean, renewable, and too cheap to meter. And that radioactive hot particles used to boil water, or heat the air such as in this case, has absolutely no link to global warming whatsoever. It is instead due to CO2, an inert gas that plants need to generate oxygen through photosynthesis, by use of chlorophyl, a chemical that gives plants their green color.

I would argue that the attitudes haven't changed too much since the first Cold War, as it seems people in the US and in Europe are still determined to make Russia the enemy and to therefore spend more money on the military than on the well-being of our own citizens. I don't know about Britain, but I am quite sure safety has taken a backseat to motivations of fear here in the United States.
