Hope you enjoyed guys! In terms of fashion, which historic period would you most liked to have lived through? 🤔

I read some comments that suggested that Pretty Woman was too contemporary to have gotten the historical costume treatment. I'll be a devils advocate. I think the PW used clothing to showcase trends, class,etc... and just because you are in the moment does NOT mean all costumers do that well. I know it is easy to say Pride & Prejudice is honorably in the old days but costuming is NOT manacled to olden days. It uses what we thought we knew about the days we lived in to tell us something about character. NOT all costumers have done this well. So while I don't know about that 9 for PW it has a right to be in the midst of this discussion.

Pretty Woman was only historic costume to us now. When it was made the clothing was contemporary to the time. One of these things is not like the others.

For a costume, I took a bunch of beautiful muslin curtains that I had wanted to dress some large windows with, I instead used them to make a regency style dress, the first I ever made, and it came out very pretty, I never wear it, I just have it, and my daughters pull it and the other one I made and we look at them from time to time. I’ve often wondered if I should donate them to a high school theater or something, there just so time specific, and I’m not sure my one daughter would part with them.

I really don't understand this "expert's" comments, she says about Forrest Gump: "Really beautifully observed BUT its kind of american hippie, its Woodstock, its that look. BUT its interesting, did that american look translate across the Atlantic to Europe and to Britain? Im not sure...". And one is left wondering what does THAT have to do with the costumes of two american characters that are talking to each other IN freaking WASHINGTON DC after an anti Vietnam war rally? If the costumes look "American Hippie" and "Woodstock look" then they are perfect because that is exactly what they are trying to depict. No idea why she makes it sound as if the fact that they are not British looking makes them flawed. She also criticized Titanic costumes as "too Hollywood" when it is know that the James Carmeron production copied many pieces directly from that period garments and bought many true vintage ones to be used in the film too. Then she gives 8 to all the first movies rated no matter what she commented on whether she liked more or less they all got 8...and finally give such good comments about a movie that wasn't even a historical film because it was filmed and set in the 90's so its not like the costume designers had to investigate anything they just went out shopping and got what was fashionable at the time...gee I wonder how they got the "period" so accurately depicted...🤦. Very disapointing video really.

Keira Knightly looks so gorgeous in period costumes and of course a lot of it has to do with her slight figure. Obesity is more of a modern acceptable look and it was a rare sight until about say 30 years ago

I’m sure she’s an expert but the ‘Hollywood’ comment on titanic was odd. Where she’s talking about the hat and she totally missed the fact that the dress was an exact copy of a dress from the era

Wow. As a complete clothing fetishist and costume maker, I loved this! I always focus on the clothes, (and the fit of the clothes) in anything I see, be it current global cultures or historical costumes. I was hand sewing a fur hat while watching this but had to stop and focus. This was very interesting! Thank you.

The Kiera Knight version of Pride and Prejudice's costumes were awful. This was a gentleman and a gentleman's daughter and they looked like rough farmers. Don't even get me started on the bonnets or lack thereof. There was One, and it looked straight from the 70's on Jane. It was terrible and the costumes were so bad, it put me off the whole movie. The cuts were weird, and their hair was a mess. I hated it so much.

I agree with the commentator that one can frequently see the period in which a film or series was made by the costume/make up and hair styles. I often watch something unknown to me and have fun guessing when it was made. The Pallisers is an excellent example.

Pretty Woman was never anything Historic? like it was contemporary for the time, which now in retrospect looks historic to us, but when it was contemporary there was nothing one could do wrong, just like a movie set in the 2020s we could wear our everyday clothing aswell, though the costuming department still did an amazing job, even with contemporary desgins.

She's so softspoken and lovely. I love her appreciation for the costumes and how happy she is watching these clips. A lot of people reacting to historical costumes always laugh or roll their eyes at the costuming in movies if it's inaccurate, and she didn't. I really appreciate that.

"Keira Knightley with her shawls and her loose hair looks like she's just gone to a festival..." (Yep, she's untidy, To me, drab and strained.) "Many of these versions (of Pride and Prejudice) reflect the era in which they were filmed... the "Wonder Bra"/prominent bosoms" image is present in the 1995 film and the "Boho" in the 2005 film". Couldn't agree more.

The 2005 Pride and Prejudice film costumes and hair are awful. They all look scruffy, unkempt and in need of a bath.
The costumes in The Darkest Hour appear correct to me. They certainly match the photos of my grandmother and her friends throughout WW2 in England.

One thing to keep in mind about period piece movies is that no matter how much the detail is given to the historical aspects, there’s always something overlooked. And in terms of contemporary movies “snapshot” of a time period like the
“Pretty Woman “ movie, at the very beginning of a decade, it will be the zenith of the previous decade. So, even though 1990 signified a new generation emerging, it really has what had been the “hallmark” of the 1980s. I say this because by 1998-99 that style of dress and fashion was gone. The 1900s became the style of “the grunge” or “waif” look and business attire was dismissed for more casual clothes. Interesting historical assessments. Thanks for posting!

I was a bit surprised that the lack of chemisettes in day wear, especially for young unmarried women whose dresses had low necklines, wasn't mentioned. This seemed like a pretty common accessory during the period. I think that the more exposed decollete was something left for evening.
