I was using brave search until they started using Google for images

i noticed qwant and ecosia have about the same privacy policy issues, yet you put them in different tiers. why is that?

DuckDuckgo is exposed they have agreement with Microsoft they don't block trackers from Microsoft.

I'll opt for yandex any day of the week. the results rival the old days of the internet. I pretty much only search for "controversial" content. So, go ahead and surveil, me, Russia. I'm already full up with it from every possible angle anyway.

It seems that Google's the best search engine but is to be shunned due to it's flagrant tracking. Why not just stop the tracking by always accessing it thru a VPN service? Won't that block the "problem" with google?

Mojeek seems to return the most Jack Kirby results, this should bump it up one tier.

I've been using DDG for as long as it existed, so I don't even know what I don't or can't find.

well i dont know for sure but i think what the brave search results independence means is that they didnt bother giving you bad search results while they are mining the web for the indexes, but they used bing, google and maybe some more to build their index and maybe they use also unpersonalized data about which websites have which subpages that do not require any authentication to build their own indexes too

Startpage was bought by an advertising company called System1. It should be lower on this list. We sadly cannot trust it anymore.

How about a search engine that just delivers what I ask for. I am making an image database of actresses over time: When I enter, say, Hayley Mills I only want images of Hayley Mills. All of the search engines I have tried so far send me images of of every one named Hayley and sometimes even images of men. I know about surrounding wanted terms with quote or plus signs but these do nothing at all to slim down the number of unwanted terms or images.

I find DDG results better than google in most cases, aside from google-scholar searches but that those aren't really a general web search. Of course DDG isn't really open source which means trust is inherently limited, but good enough for practical use and doesn't feed the 800pound gorilla.

Here: Disable privacy settings in Google. I never get personalized adds, videos, pictures, or searches. The only get generalized info like this account watching this video.

Google search results relevance have gotten worse recently (last few years). They might still be the best but Google from a few years ago was better
