And the working conditions at the bottom of the supply chain are atrocious. The tech companies and the industry at large are lying about the workers' treatment. Every mine is crammed full of people. Every plant has working conditions that'd make textile mill owners from 250 years ago proud.

In 2006, I had a used 1997 Toshiba Techra laptop I bought for $200 in 2005. The on/off swicth was broken and the Fry's Electonics Geek Squad in California wanted $200 to replace the stupid little switch. It was an obsolete Windows 98 PC anyway and I said the devil with that. I then bought, from Fry's, a new Toshiba Satellite Windows XP upgradable to Vista for about $700 new then and got about 11 years of service out of it with one memory upgrade and one hard drive replacement in between.

Nowadays, I bring as many old/unserviceable electronics as I can to Staples to be recycled hoping I am helping to save the planet by doing that.

There is a company that recycles electronic gadgets. But the thing that needs to be done is to convince manufacturers to stop using toxic substances and to change their attitude that making more money is more important than to stop the damage that is created by making these machines disposable. THAT is the hardest part. Money blinds people .

i think business as a whole is taking a turn to a better side. the concepts explored in the latter part of this are extremely simplified and unrealistic. suffice to say let stall humanity this is arguably far more detrimental. as a whole more can be done but the extremism of this and villainising of CEOs is dangerous.

If you don't pay your engineers to make long lasting products, they wont make long lasting products. Also legislating production will just drive said production elsewhere, where they don't care about the non financial cost and only want to make profits.

Sure, but the cost of greener production is less effective stuff. Bad for health or not, noxious chemicals get the job done.

The reason it is dumped in third world countries is because you can just write the dumping off as a donation.

It's called designed obsolescence. Also this is the cost of progress.
