Before beginning your installation, there are a couple things you need to know. One, you can build a complete custom track system using different combinations of track sections, connectors, and lights. However, not all track components are compatible with one another. Always check the manufacturer before buying to ensure everything will work together.

You will also need a free ceiling junction box to tap into and provide power to your track lighting system. If your room does not have a ceiling junction box, we recommend contacting a licensed electrician for possible solutions.

The installation featured in this video used a variety of track components to light a home office, to show the variety of options available. We've decided on an L-shape track layout, illuminating both the desk area and some wall art. It helps to lay out all your track components on a table to double check you have everything you need.

For power, you have two main options. If your ceiling junction box is near where you intend to install your track, you can use a live end feed to go directly into the junction box. If the junction box is not near where you wish to install your track, you will need to use a floating canopy. This installs anywhere on the track. You can run your wires from the junction box to the canopy, which in turn provides power to the entire track system.

Today's video shows an installation using the floating canopy option, rather than the live end feed. We are also using one eight foot track, and one four foot track. An elbow shaped connector will give us the L-shape in the finished design. To complete the look, we've selected six black finish track heads for lighting.

For the installation, you will need the following tools: a ladder, a drill, a screwdriver, hammer, tape measure, voltage meter, and other tools as necessary.

With electricity, it's always safety first. Before beginning your installation, make sure the power to the ceiling junction box is turned off at the breaker box. Your voltage meter will confirm the power is off.

Start by attaching the canopy feed kit to the junction box. Then, position the track where you want it on the ceiling. Drill the holes and secure the track to the ceiling using the screws and screw driver. Then, secure the feed to the track with the included hardware. Now, attach, the floating canopy itself. Position any connectors, such as a the elbow connector used in this video. Use this to attach your other track sections, and also secure them to the ceiling.

Now, you can add your track lights. Insert them onto the track and position them in your desired location. We recommend spacing your lights a minimum of two feet apart. Aim them as needed to illuminate the desired area of your space.

Turn the power back on to confirm that your track system is in working order, and make any final adjustments as needed. You can also combine your track system with a wall dimmer switch for added flexibility.
