Ward, great interview. I loved it. As a 75 y/o woman I have a new hero - Kevin Larosa (Call Sign K-2). I am so glad you brought it up with Glenn Powell!

But his commanding officer had the Navy Cros, he said in the June 1950 scene. The rest didn't even have a Good Conduct medal then.

Top gun is stupid Hollywood.

This movie would of been better as a IFC film with better known actors. This True story needs & deserves better remake. Sorry however this is the comment section.
The cartoon version is super better & hart felt.

Had to be one of, if not the most boring movie I have ever seen. The first hour of the movie could be cut with no affect whatsoever.

So that's here where Bagman (oops, Hangman) got his first kill on a Korean War airplane (or Cold War, as they'd put it on Top Gun Maverick).

I wonder, does that line on Top Gun has any connection with the scene on Devotion, the one he shots the Mig? Since Devotion came first, who knows?

@WardCarrol, do you know, sir?

Just rented the BluRay disc. Great story (aside from the shore leave in Cannes,) and the flying scenes were sensational.

Mr Ward, thanks for another informative video that I just got around to watching. I wish I could give this 10 thumbs up. I have not had the opportunity to see this movie yet. I live in a small town where this movie did not remain very long so I missed it on big screen. Also, before I was a Marine Corps helicopter mechanic in the 70s, I was a teenage airport delinquent hanging out every chance I could at Corky Fornof's hangar sweeping the floor around a Bearcat just so he would let me hangout there. Looking forward to watching this movie even more after this interview and also happy to see the F8F get some recognition.

Good movie but was a little disappointed. There should have been more character development especially for that of Jesse Brown. The character of Tom Hudon seemed to eclipse that of Brown's when the reverse should have been the case.

It's something that had to be done, rather than just a film making business. And we were lucky enough to see it acted by descendants of real Korean War Heroes.

@WardCarroll …Thank You for this. During the Korean War, my Dad went down to the USN recruiting office and expressed a desire to become a Naval Aviator. The response?

“Sorry…we already got one of you…try the Air Force.”

THAT was how I learned about Ensign Brown.

And THAT is why I so appreciate your piece. Oh how far we’ve come. I appreciate your coverage, Ward. Thank You.

I thought it was interesting the see the Grumman F8F Bearcat in some of the trailers for the film Devotion. When the Korean War started in 1950, it was decided not to use the Bearcat there. Before MiG-15 jets entered combat there, the air opposition was minimal and compared to the F4U Corsair, the F8F Bearcat was judged an inferior ground attack plane. The F8F Bearcat, the successor to the Grumman F6F Hellcat, has aways been and interesting carrier fighter design that only started shipping after World II was over. The Grumman F8F Bearcat had some design compromises that allowed it to have an unbelievable climb rate.

It’s amazing to see Glen Powell showing such enthusiasm for naval aviation and wanting to be so involved this film as well as Top Gun: Maverick. I am really excited to learn more about and see his upcoming Blue Angels documentary! It’s also great that Tom Cruise was supportive of this film as well.

I wish someone would fund a PROPER telling of the Red Tails story. There have been a few in the past that were clearly underfunded, yet featured many prominent African American Actors, but lacked the real grit and proper celebration that the actual story deserves.

So he went from flying navy FA-18 Hornet in TopGun Maverick to flying F4U Corsair in Devotion but can he shoot down a J20 Mighty Dragon? That way he be the first to shoot down both the mighty dragon and Felon that’s even better than Maverick

Ward's old friend, the A6 B/N, got me thinking "I would love to see Ward do some videos on the A6 crews, the plane itself, and their missions.
This also reminds me of another great aviation film `Flight Of The Intruder', which had IMHO the best flying scenes at the time it came out. Superb cinematography for aviation buffs. I think it's probably only outdone by Maverick, and probably now this film `Devotion'.

Thomas Sadoski needed more praise for playing one of the best squadron COs I've ever seen in a military aviation movie. If there's any criticism I can levy, it's a lack of enlisted people being showcased.

The movie could be a good one and largely accurate except that MiG-15 with Soviet markings doesn't belong in picture, and that aircraft was not involved in actual air battle involving either Hudner or Brown. I read the Adam Makos book and the glaring for movie thrill incident involving fictional MiG-15 sort of spoilt rest of movie at the beginning. MiG-15 were flown by Soviet, Chinese and DPR Korea pilots but always in Chinese or DPR Korea markings.

Just more political indoctrination. Every movie a message. Funny how this didnt become a movie until now. Naming a CVN after Dory Miller for manning an anti-aircraft gun which was done by hundreds that day when an admiral and two battleship captains died on their bridges on battleship row that day but they were not black. Captain of West Virginia was disemboweled by shrapnel that day and despite the unbelievably amount of pain died on his bridge doing his job while refusing medical care to ease his pain. LCDR Bruce McCandless won CMOH for saving USS San Francisco at battle of Guadalcanal after all the other officers who were senior to him were killed by pointblank 14 inch shells from a Japanese battleship.

I found out about this movie while attending an airshow at the Warhawk Museum this year, when the Corsair was flying the announcer started talking about the movie that specific plane was staring in. I watched the trailer as soon as I returned home and am looking forward to seeing it. It looks great and it's an amazing story that is well worth telling.

This director really comes across as passionate about the subject matter and his dad and upbringing really makes him a great person to helm this sort of project. I love it when someone sounds so enthusiastic about the story they are telling.
