I used to live at 4016 N. 25th St. St. Louis Mo. (West City) and can tell you, when you see those blockades, stay away. Those were put up because of drive-by shooters. My friend George whom I lived with told me they would shoot through the front windows in the 90s. By the time I got there to live with him his Aunt Ruth was deceased (she lived through the drive-bys) and the neighborhood was just so abandoned, there was hardly anyone left to care that he was the last white stronghold from 1963. He was so stubborn, he won the war by way of attrition. Even the blacks had no more reason to keep the territory (terror tori). Most of the surrounding hoses (all including his were built in or around 1820) were burned out by drug lord's cocking houses or just so fallen down it exposed the interior.

So, it's a good thing it was 9 am but still, if you find yourself there again, turn right around when you see those road blicks!

The factories, warehouses, stores have closed down in East St. Louis and it has been that way for close to 50 to 60 years. Some of the people leaving the racial innuendo comments need to do their research. That is why white flight happened and many blacks stayed behind, in particular those who could not afford to leave. Many whites moved to neighborhoods that looked a lot like them, where they didn’t worry about being accepted and jobs were bountiful. The same did not apply for blacks who often faced racism and dealt with discriminatory practices by realtors and employers.

Kinda funny. Buildings collapsing, schools collapsing, people going hungry...

Yet always enough money to build a new police station....

This is a drastic over exaggeration!!! East Saint Louis is a very poor town due to lack of jobs, poor healthcare (businesses in Sauget dumping waste in East Saint Louis) and poor infrastructure! Yes it is very bad in comparison to O’Fallon, Edwardsville, Glen Carbon, etc! It’s not like you can’t drive through there or go to see good high school football!!! Granted it’s not the best place to go hangout at night time, but it’s not worst than North Saint Louis!!!

So STUPID that you say people are fleeing to the suburbs. Nobody would consider East St. Louis a suburb of St. Louis. It's NOT! It's in a completely different state (Illinois). If someone is going to flee from the city to a suburb, it's going to be north, south or west, NOT EAST!!!

Most cities with about 18,000 people are lucky to get 1 or 2 homicides a year and the Mayor is nicknaming East St. Louis,East Safe Louis with 25 homicides,that's laughable.

Illinois also has extremely high property taxes and with the loss of Industry and Manufacturing,it's a recipe for disaster.East St. Louis is the epitome of this,the population peaked to around 82,000 in 1950 to about 18,000 now.

Should have seen it in the late 90's back before they tore most the buildings down. It literally looked like a war zone through there. Ill never forget we accidentally took a wrong exit and found our way though there on July 4, 1999 on the way to a Cardinal's game.

Being right across the river from St. Louis, there's really no reason for ESL to not be more economically viable. To me, it falls on Illinois to put more effort/money into it to make it an attractive destination for people that work in St. Louis. First step is to clean it up and make it safe, then build/refurbish so people want to live there. Then, you can start bringing in local businesses to cater to those people. A good blueprint would be Jeffersonville, IL, which is connected to Louisville via a pedestrian bridge. I would assume that St. Louis and ESL could have the same kind of relationship, considering the GDP of St. Louis is 3x that of Louisville.

I didn't realize East Peoria has a higher population than East St. Louis now. I do think highly of some funk/soul records that came out of East St. Louis in the late 60s/early 70s, including two by The Young Disciples (Bang Bang Bang! and Crumbs Off The Table) and stuff on the Yodi label (I think an abbrevation of the same). These were part of a program to keep youth off the streets.
