The Alliance knew that the Reaver Fleet was out there attacking isolated settlers and travellers, but was content to avoid taking responsibility for the problem. This is the Operative having to bite the bullet.

I saw this movie before I ever heard of Firefly. Imagine my surprise when I was introduced to that incredible show!

I love How mal keeps outsmarting the operative the operative always thinks he has the upper hand but Mal always 10 moves ahead

I would love to see this from the perspective of an Alliance fighter pilot. Just doing drills and chilling and then bam! dog fighting with Reavers

I still wonder how the hell Reavers can pilot ships if they're nothing but a bunch of aggressive mutant savages.

I love how the strongest navy in the sector, in all its shiny professionalism and rigid organization are challenged by the sheer weight of "who-gives-a-fuck"

Seems like an out of date metaphor for a potential civil war. Since the reavers are supposed to represent urban African Americans and poor whites, it implied that they'd fight the corrupt government. The whole message has since been proven to be out of date. In reality the individualistic respect culture that dominates many black communities is also present in much of the white population and, as imageboards, massacrees, and recent history have shown, it never went away but instead was only suppressed. The linking of autism to the "reavers" is actually true but its because autistic people are just the same kinds of people but trying to fit in and feeling like they can't defend themselves. This has of course created a worrying condition where gun hoarders, autistic people, and many black people are actually all on the same team and are assimilating others. This creates a powder keg when you consider that members of all those groups are also on the other side which is why politics has gotten so extreme. The people on the side of the institutions and ivory tower need to realize that they were wronged by their teachers but it wasn't out of malice. An attempt to create a less violent America resulted in a situation where massive amounts of violence could occur. Schools made a big mistake trying to stop bullying because they ended up causing many kids to latch onto the institutions as a means of protection and as a weapon to demand respect from others or punish disrespect. We're all the same Americans. The ivory tower needs to come clean about everything and beg for forgiveness as society moves forward and we owe them that forgiveness. Its better than the evil british blackmailing the establishment.

Mal: Wait, where's the alliance fleet?
Mr. Universe: What alliance fleet? I told you I'd let you know if anyone else showed up. Did you not believe me?
Mal: Well this is awkward. We were sure this was a trap. Um... so we might have done something dumb on the way over...

I still don't understand how a bunch of space zombies can expertly pilot ships at all.

I still say that THIS is what the Han Solo movie should've been. Still one of the best action sequences I've seen in a sci-fi movie in a while.

It might be a bit of an afterthought, but the fact that armed reinforcements show up to confront River at the end means that the alliance ultimately won this battle. The Reavers clearly had them put through the ringer up in space, but in the end they still prevailed. Shows that even when facing a mighty opponent, the Alliance is no slouch.

I live how the music changes and dramatically changes tune when the Reavers appear through the storm and seeing the horde of them which instills panic in the dude because of how big a threat of this sudden appearence.

Shame we never got more of this universe. The tech is very grounded, essentially the only major advancement in Firefly is the discovery of a way to control gravity, which I think we'll figure out someday. No FTL, no photon torpedoes, no antimatter engines. I'd love to see more of this world

If the reavers were so insanely aggressive and barbaric how do they manage to operate as a tightly cohesive space battle group without killing each other ? Even orks have a formal of command and control , I always thought of reavers as a level above zombies on steroids.

'Bastards not even chancing course.' Always loved that line and the inkling or admiration and respect for Mal, who sees a fleet of alliance warships and doesn't even try to avoid them, only to quickly be replaced by horror and dismay.

You have to admire the simplicity of Mal's plan. He basically punched a bear and ran away so it would follow him to a bigger and tastier target.

My wife and I saw this movie before we even knew about Firefly. This movie did an incredible job of introducing us to the characters; it was so well done.

The Operative and Director Krennic could commiserate with each other about underlings without initiative.
