Getting the the core still puts you in another galaxy, and you do restart in the new one. But as long as you have access to teleporters, you can return to a previous base or space station in other galaxies.
Edited for clarity: Its not a full restart, you still have all your stuff, but it will damage the ship and multitool, and you will have to relocate the ship.

I should take a look the next days. but there are so many Games to play at the moment.

The beginning is such a grind but its a good feeling when you get the upgrades and tech to cut it to a minimum
